CHAPTER NINE
THE NEXT DAY haven walked to her locker at school when she spotted jackson storming his way toward scott. her eyes widened as she watched jackson slam scott into the lockers, a tight grip on the collar of his shirt.
"alright little man," jackson hissed, glaring at scott. "how about you tell me where you're getting your juice."
"what?!" scott asked, confusion written all over his face.
"where are you getting your juice?" jackson growled, shoving scott further into the lockers.
"my mom does all the grocery shopping." scott told him, not catching onto what jackson was trying to imply about him.
"now, listen, mccall..." jackson chuckled in irritation. "you're gonna tell me exactly what it is and who you're buying it from, because there is no way in hell you're out there kicking ass on the field without some sort of chemical boost."
"oh! you mean steroids!" scott caught in, letting out a huff. "are you on steroids?"
"what the hell is going on with you mccall?!" jackson demanded, glaring at the dark haired boy furiously with mixed jealousy.
"what's going on with me?! you really wanna know?! well so would i because i can see, hear, and smell things that i shouldn't be able to see, hear, and smell!" scott shifted in jackson's grip, glaring back at him. "i do things that should be impossible! i'm sleepwalking three miles into the middle of the woods, and i'm pretty much totally convinced that i'm out of my freaking mind!"
jackson chuckled, continuing to stare at scott angrily. "you think you're funny, don't you mccall?"
jackson dropped his hand from scott, backing up slowly as he kept his blue eyes locked on the nervous boy. "i know you're hiding something and i'm gonna find out what it is. i don't care how long it takes."
before walking away, jackson glanced after haven who stood there frozen. he gave her a small smile, disappearing down the hall.
haven walked over to scott after slamming her locker shut. "what the hell was that about?!"
"remember the other day when you were sitting at our lacrosse practice with lydia and allison? and how i told you i wasn't the best but ended up kicking ass on the field?" haven nodded at scott's words, but gave him a confused look.
"so why is jackson mad?" she asked him as they walked to their next class.
"no idea." he mumbled, letting out a sigh.
•••
after a long stressful day, haven left a note at the house saying she was meeting up with a friend. only this time, she had many questions and mixed emotions. she didn't want derek to get mad at her.
she saw him seated patiently at the picnic table, sun glasses covering his light green eyes as the harsh sun started to fall down the horizon.
heat rushed to her cheeks as she studied the rose hues on his porcelain skin, making him seem more irresistible. his lips were slightly parted as he basked in the slight warm of the sun light.
he could hear her pounding heart, sensing the anxiety and nervousness reeking from her. his eyebrows furrowed at the sudden change in the aura surrounding her, wondering what the hell had happen to her.
he listened carefully as her soft sounding footsteps grew closer until she was seated across from him, her bottom lip pulled between her teeth.
"i need to ask you something." she broke the silence, her voice wavering slightly.
"is everything okay?" he asked, a few theories as to what she was planning to ask him running through his mind.
she sucked in a sharp breath, running her tongue across her bottom lip as she broke eye contact. "how do you know scott mccall?"
derek's entire body stiffened, his blood running cold as the named echoed in his mind. his jaw tightened evidently, a sense of anger boiling in the pit of his stomach as his inner wolf growled in annoyance.
"i've been helping him with something he wants to learn how to control. why?" his voice came out rougher than he intended and inwardly cursed when she flinched slightly.
"yesterday, when you dropped me off at home, he recognized you and told me to stay away from you." she mumbled quietly, thinking he wouldn't quite hear.
but he heard her loud and clear. he huffed, rolling his eyes at scott's attempt to make haven stay away from him. he didn't know what was running through her mind and that bothered him.
then something dawned on him and he turned his head to look at her, his eyebrows pulling together. "wait, you're living there?"
"yes," she looked up at him with her big brown eyes. "his mom took me in a few weeks ago."
tension and awkward silence quickly rose between the two and haven shifted uncomfortably. she began regretting about asking him about scott. she should've just left it to be. maybe it wasn't her business. but she wanted to know why scott told her to stay away from him.
she broke the silence by clearing her throat and standing up. "i should probably go. i have homework and stuff to do. i'm sorry."
he quickly stood up as he stopped her, "haven wait–don't go."
"i should, it's probably for the best. scott doesn't want me around you." she told him as she avoided any eye contact with him. "do you know why he doesn't want me around you?"
"no." he lied, shaking his head. "i don't. but please, just trust me on this. i'm not a bad person if that's what he tried telling you."
"you know, when people try to convince others that they aren't a bad person, it's means they must've done something to make people not trust them." she lifted her eyes to look at derek, crossing her arms over her chest making her look small.
"haven, it's not true. please trust me." he almost pleaded, his stomach twisted strangely as he tried to keep her from walking away.
"i can't trust anyone." she whispered. "i'm sorry."
she gave him one last look, swiftly turning around and walking away. he watched as she disappeared into the distance, his heart becoming increasingly heavy.
then his face pulled into a harsh expression, a low growl slipping past his lips. "damn you, scott."
