I made my way over to an empty corner, as I'm not much of a talkative Person. I took out my short dagger and began to sharpen it with a whetstone I had brought along.
Someone sat in front of me. Having already heard his approach I did not stop the rhythmic motions of my hands as I continued to sharpen my dagger. Looking up slightly I noticed it was the scar faced man.
"Why did you help me?"
His voice was deep and manly. With a straight posture and a simple expression, He seemed like what you would assume a knight in training would be like...maybe he was trying to become one. I know there are many places you can go, after getting into the academy. The prestigious academy opens many doors, that's why so many people want to get in.
Without stopping my hand movements, I shrugged.
He went quiet. It seemed he wasn't much of a talker either.
"My name is Spencer."
I wasn't much of a social person, and I'm not one to trust easily. So I didn't think giving out my name to a person I just met was something I should consider. But it did seem like he was planning on befriending me, as he continued to sit there.
Soon he also began sharpening his sword. And we both fell into a comfortable silence. The clang and swipe of our whetstone the only noise between us.
As time went by I noticed more people joining the group. It looks like the next test would start shortly.
I continue to observe my competitors from the corner of my eyes. It didn't seem like anyone really cared for my presence. I guess it made sense, since my small build and choice of weapons really was not that much of threat...It looks like I was being underestimated. Lifting my lips up in a half smirk, I let out small chuckle.
Hearing my small slip up, Spencer looks up suddenly at me and tilts his head slightly... almost as if he was unsure of what he heard.
"What's so funny"
I look further down, keeping my face hidden and lift my shoulders in a small shrug. Focusing back on the task at hand, ignoring his unwavering gaze. I only relax after seeing Spencer continue sharpening his own sword.
I freeze as I distinctively hear the sound of marching. The sound of well trained soldiers. Soon the rest of the group seemed to hear it as well.
The double doors to the waiting room is pushed open as an examiner walks in with a trail of soldiers
following a few paces behind. The previously noisy waiting room goes silent as the examiner walks to an elevated platform.
"Congratulations for having made it this far.
His loud and steady voice made its way across the entire room.
"There is about 50 contestants remaining, in which each and every one of you have exhibited your talents and skills to the other examiners including myself."
As the examiner looked around the room, he briefly paused in my direction, before looking away to the rest of the contestants. Scrunching my eyebrows in confusion, I continue to listen attentively
"This next test will further enhance your worth to the academy. We will be looking for someone we can teach, someone who's willing to improve. We are looking for the best among the best, so show us everything you have, for it may be your last chance... Before I explain the rest, I would like the winners from group 1 to 5 on the left and groups 6 to 10 on the right.
After a short hesitation, everyone began to move to their respected corners. I was group 7 so I went to the right with Spencer following closely behind me. I noticed there were servants in the corner with what looked like red cloth. They handed one to everyone in the group to the right. Looking across the room, I noticed, that the other group was getting blue strips of cloth. Is it perhaps going to be...
The clearing of a throat had everyone pausing to look back at the examiner.
"With that done, it seems like some of you have realized what the next test would be.
Smiling broadly the examiner stated in a joyful tone.
"The next test will be team play."
