Sana sat, back against the door. Her nerves were starting to work against her. She didn't know if the book would get x-rayed or if the inmate said "I didn't order this" or "I don't want this." If the blade was found, the prison would undergo lockdown and the security would multiply tenfold. If the blade didn't get through, everything would fail.
The book should arrive any day now. Her eyes remained glued on the door across from hers. That inmate had no idea a book was coming her way, nor that there was a hacksaw blade hidden inside it. A familiar buzzing sound brought her focus back as she watched a security guard walk in holding a green-backed book.
"Hey, Jessi. Didn't know you could read."
He lifted the panel and carelessly tossed the book inside the cell.
Sana watched as the inmate, most likely Jessi, picked up the book and looked at the cover.
"The fuck? Ethics and Philosophy?"
Sana could hear the girl angrily slam the book onto the ground.
I can't give any sign of my plan away, so I can't immediately get that book now. So I must wait.
Sana watched the inmate Jessi pace back and forth in her cell. A couple of days elapsed before Sana made her move.
"Hey, Jessi. Are you gonna read that book?"
Sana peered blankly through the opening of her door as Jessi scoffed before pressing the intercom in her room.
Success, thought Sana as the guard entered the corridor to deliver the book to her.
As soon as the guard left, Sana dug her fingers into the spine of the book, ripping apart its fibers. She pulled out a small blade, no longer than her hand before stuffing it into her pillow.
Any evidence that could potentially point back to her had to be destroyed. She ripped page by page, cover to cover, flushing chunks of paper wads down the toilet. She had to act fast. Who knew if it was a ruse by the police to catch any potential escapees. She tore through the book faster just merely thinking about it.
As she leaned back against her cot, she grinned. Getting the blade made her slightly excited but also a little nervous. She didn't know for sure if her plan was going to work.
She began to iron her plan out. On her way in, she recalled a ventilation system leading out of the roof. That could be her way out. With her new blade, perhaps she could cut her way through the ceiling and into the vents.
With the blade palmed in her hand, Sana snuck over to the toilet and entered the blind spot. She lifted the blade up and scraped it across the ceiling. The scratch screeched loudly from her cell. Within a few scratches, an inmate spoke up.
"What's that noise? You drilling for diamond ore in there?" said an inmate sarcastically.
"You trying to be free, girl?" said another. "Build yourself a tunnel already?"
Then it dawned on her. She was surrounded by twelve other inmates, at least half were guaranteed snitches, willing to rat her out for a time reduction.
Stressed, she rubbed her head. The only way she would be able to cut through is when things were really loud in the corridor. I have to get them to cover for me. Get them to cause a distraction without them realizing it. It shouldn't be too hard. They must be bored out of their minds, willing to do anything for entertainment.
Sana pressed her head close to the door.
"Hey Andrea, lemme hear something."
Sana's neighboring inmate across the hall neighboring Jessi's cell peered through her window. "Oh Sana, I've got something for you. I wrote a new song just for this.
