The first thing Dahyun noticed was the gag in her mouth. An oily rag tasting metallic; clogging her mouth and soaking up her saliva. Next were the binds around her wrists, pulling them behind her back. The same rope-like binds held her ankles together, leaving her helpless to stand, pressed against the cold concrete floor. Opening her eyes was no use. She was only met with the canvas blindfold. It only allowed a dim yellow light through the stitching. She had no idea where she was.
"She's waking up." A voice whispered. Female and high pitched, the voice sounding foreign with a slight accent. "Should we get Chaeyoung?"
"Of course, you should you fucking dumbass." Another female with a similar accent. Her voice was deeper and gruff with her anger.
Dahyun tried to move into a seated position despite her binds. She squirmed against the ground, grunting as she managed to prop herself up on her elbows behind her, her head off the ground.
There was a shuffle of footsteps beside her, indicating several people entering the room.
"Put the camera in the corner of the room and start the filming. We can cut the footage after I'm done and send it through." A new voice. Low, yet childish in nature. There was a calculated rhythm to her words as if before she opened her mouth, every word had been planned and practiced beforehand. Dahyun tensed when she thought she might recognise the woman that she could sense was standing very close, looking down at her tied body.
"Mute the sound." Footsteps, hard cold knocks on the concrete, came closer. "I'm not starting my message just yet."
The clunking of feet stopped just above Dahyun's head. There was a ruffle of clothes; someone kneeling before her. And in one swift movement, her blindfold was pulled down beneath her chin.
A girl's face filled Dahyun's vision. A face she instantly recognised.
"Ah, Kim Dahyun-ssi! You're awake. Good, good." Son Chaeyoung's smile was the shape of a waning crescent moon, her dimples betraying her slit eyebrow and multiple piercings in an attempt to look sinister. Her hair hung in a curtain around her childish face, cut to her jaw and it flowed with her speech.
She adjusted her position, so she was crouched beside Dahyun, her arms resting lightly on her knees. She pulled up the sleeves of her expensive black coat around her elbows.
"I'm sure you know why you're here. You're not dumb right? Top student in your university. That's not a lie is it?" She let a puff of air through her lips. "You're not a liar like your daddy, are you?"
Dahyun had known her father, the CEO of one of the biggest technology companies in Korea, had been meddling in some questionable business with outsiders in the industry but she never thought that he would be the perpetrator of deceit, no matter the circumstances.
Son Chaeyoung, leader of the largest Mafia gathering in Korea, was one of her father's biggest provider of free labour in exchange for drugs that the company is able to purchase off the black market under the radar of the authorities. Dahyun had never liked this sort of business, and tried not to associate herself with it, but her still being reliant on her father's support until she was able to find her own job, was often unable to avoid it at all.
She had seen Son Chaeyoung out the front of her father's office more than once. Standing there in her leather boots and huge coats like she owned the world. Every cent that Chaeyoung spent on those designer clothes was stolen, smuggled or bribed into her hands.
"He promised me some money. Big money." She licked her lips. "And he promised me this money a very, very long time ago." She cocked her head at Dahyun, who kept her expression as neutral as possible to conceal her growing apprehension. "I don't like to be kept waiting. Not. At. All."
She reached down her cold hand covered in jewellery caressing Dahyun's cheek and running through her hair.
"So, let's have a discussion." Her hands moved to the back of Dahyun's neck to pull the tie of the rag that remained in her mouth. She pulled and the rag dropped free. Dahyun saw that it was covered in blood. She wondered if it was her own.
"Where's the money, Kim?" Chaeyoung asked, standing up and beginning to pace back and forth in the small room, her image tracing in and out of Dahyun's sight.
"I-I don't deal with my father's money." Dahyun stuttered, her voice shaky and quiet, betraying her resolve.
Chaeyoung chuckled. She glanced at the camera that stood on a tripod at Dahyun's feet.
"Well, we're gonna have to change that now." She turned her gaze back to Dahyun, looking down at her position on the floor. It made Dahyun feel insignificant and small. The words that next came out of the leader's mouth only made her feel smaller.
"You are now my pathway into your father's pockets. You for the money. Fair exchange, right?" She laughed, walking over to the camera. "You're worth about four-hundred-million won, right? I'm not stooping too low... am I?"
Dahyun cringed at the sum of money. It wasn't the biggest investment her father had made, not by far. But it would surely put a stunt to his business growth for a while if he were to lose it all in one go.
"I'm going to get you to say a few words to daddy to grab his attention, ok? Can you do that for me?" Chaeyoung adjusted the positioning of the camera and pressed a button, presumably the mute. Sound was being recorded now. She desperately wanted to cry out to the camera in fear, but she knew it would be no use. It would simply be cut from the footage, only allowing what Chaeyoung wanted. She would be better off simply following along with what she was told.
Dahyun's head nodded.
"Good girl." Chaeyoung cooed, looking almost endeared by Dahyun's compliance for a split second. She regained her composure and approached; her hands outstretched. Her hands took hold of Dahyun's shoulders, helping her into a seated position. Her actions were methodical and gentle as if she had done the same routine many times in the past. It made Dahyun feel sick.
Chaeyoung reached behind her...
