Sliding the faucet, which let out cold water to stroke her delicate hands that were worn out and tired—resembling the state of her hourglass body, which was now vaguely relaxed owing to the hot shower she took earlier. Mehrul practiced this act of ablution to refine and calm her soul which felt sickened and distressed.
Cupping her hands under the running water to rinse her mouth followed by the nose. Mehrul took another handful of water and splashed it across her oblong face which twitched a little at the sudden contact of cold water however it instantly relaxed as she felt the water beads working their way down her face by washing away the coarseness and loathing touches of her husband. Every step of the ablution gave her a scintilla of tranquility.
Eventually at each step, Mehrul felt her soul—which seemed dead last night—returning to life. This wasn't the first time Mehrul had practiced her secret strategy of bringing back her soul to life. She had been doing this for five years and the sole reason that kept her going even after those long painful years was Maisha. Her daughter.
Walking out of the bathroom, Mehrul's gaze fell on the half naked, sleeping figure of her husband who was laid on his stomach—that's one of the habits maisha has inherited from her father, Mehrul thought.
However, the constant stirring and low groans of Murtaza halted her train of thoughts and she noticed the cold winds of December were disturbing his sleep, which were trespassing into the room through the open window. Mehrul swiftly moved forward to prevent the winds from escaping into the room by bolting the windows. Turning around she neared Murtaza and adjusted the duvet properly onto his torso, with the purpose of guarding him from the winter chills.
Draping her hijab securely around her face, Mehrul spread out the Musallah (A prayer mat) and stood up for her Tahajjud namaz (A voluntary prayer performed before the dawn by followers of Islam).
For Mehrul, one of the reasons for peace amidst her chaotic life was talking to Allah in Tahajjud. Pouring her heart out to the Almighty gave Mehrul the sense of hope and contentment and the strength to be patient, hoping that one day He will bless her with a stroke of luck that would compensate for all those long years of trials that Allah had made her go through.
[Allah Almighty said in Holy Quran: "Only those who are patient shall receive their rewards in full, without Hisaab (without limit, calculation, and estimation)."]
The other reason was her dearest daughter, Maisha. The little girl was her everything. Rather to say it more precisely, Mehrul's whole world revolves around Maisha. If not for her, Mehrul wouldn't have survived all these suffocating years. Maisha was the sole reason of her existence and Mehrul loved her endlessly.
Having said that, Maisha Murtaza was still the unlucky child of this emotionally detached family, Despite the undying love of her mother, Maisha has always felt the emotional unavailability and a lack of love from her father. Although Mehrul never fails to provide her with the love of both the parents singlehandedly yet Maisha's innocent heart always craved for her father's love who never actually bothered to look at her. Her heart would silently cry when Murtaza ignored her presence. No matter how much Mehrul tried but the void of his incompetent love left unmatched for Maisha.

Five years ago, Mehrul was married off to the heartless man 'The Murtaza Shahzaib' A leading business tycoon of the country. Work, parties and betting pools consumed his life. He was widely popular in the business world for his ruthlessness and terrible temper.
While Murtaza considered this marriage as just a mere settlement, Mehrul have serious consideration to this marriage and manifested to make this relationship work. At least for the sake of their love that was buried under the intense aversion due to bleak circumstances that unfortunately befall upon them.
It all started with the promise, both their parents made to each other that they would marry their kids off when they grow up and become independent but unfortunately, one fine winter morning Mehrul received the news of their parents death in a plain crash on their way back from Hajj.
Mehrul was inconsolable and shattered by the news. She was left with no one but Zohra Shahzaib and her family who happens to be her Badiammi and mother to Murtaza. Zohra has always considered Mehrul as her daughter-in-law therefore she took her under her wings and included her in the family. Since then, Mehrul lived with them and as soon as she turned twenty, Murtaza's parents married them off by forcing Murtaza to accept Mehrul when he wasn't ready. Consequently it developed misunderstandings and aversion between the couple who, at one time, secretly liked each other. One mistake of their parents ruined it all.
Their union was always on cards. It is just a matter of time until they find themselves in each other and realizes their affair of hearts.
Within a couple of months of their marriage, they moved into their own mansion and another month later Mehrul was expecting Maisha and her happiness knew no bounds as the baby brought a beacon of hope into their wrecked marriage. However, Her heart sank when she heard Murtaza's words upon listening to the good news.
"Look Mehrul, I am not at all ready for this baby. I.. I need time. I can't take the responsibility of another person yet!"
At that moment her heart felt betrayed and slain by his words, she had never expected that from murtaza. He wasn't the same person she knew back in the day.
Despite his disapproval for the baby, Mehrul didn't back out. Instead she fought with him for the first time and stood head strong against all his attempts to convince her into an abortion and brought their child into this world regardless.
Her disobedience only provoked the intense aversion that was already developed between them, which made murtaza to hate her and their child. The time flew but Murtaza's behavior didn't changed towards them. He became more arrogant and stand-offish, moreover he started keeping himself preoccupied with his business after Maisha's birth and often didn't return home from work. Mehrul at times got worried because of his unusual behavior but then he would do something impolitic which would piss her off and she'd just choose to ignore him and concentrated on her baby.
As time rolled by, Mehrul and Murtaza became distant to each other. Even so Mehrul tried to win his heart numerous times but Murtaza wouldn't budge. Their shrouded love just sinked deeper and deeper.
Nevertheless, Mehrul didn't lose hope and trusted their relationship which turned her to Allah and started seeking his help and guidance. Not even a day goes without asking Him—her Murtaza back. Mehrul have put all the trust and faith in Him and she was sure that He the As-Samee will definitely listen to her.
And there's no way Allah would let the person down who had put faith in him and trusted him with his affairs. Allah will certainly look after her sooner or later.
