    "...Boring... aaaaaaaand boring!

    "Trash.

"Boring... boring... boring... Oh, you know what, you might be special enough to go to 'recycling'!"

Pathetic as it was, this was the only way you could entertain yourself at the moment. Working for the Enforcement and Protection Agency - or the E.P.A. - was supposed to be the most exhilarating job in the city, with its ups and downs, top class special agents, and training with the best tech available. This far in time - in cultural, technological advancement - the world had all the cutting edge tech with computers, transportation, weapons and more.

But as Commander Shadow always said, nothing could ever replace the "organic experience".

Yeah... that phrase still sounded wrong.

So, despite graduating from the E.P.A. training program at sixteen - the youngest agent to ever be certified to work in the field - with highest honors, trained by the legendary "Ultimate Lifeform" himself, you were still stuck doing boring files and paperwork. You'd have thought that by the year 2223, that the world would've figured out how to get AIs to do filing.

    Apparently not.

And Shadow only encouraged the idea by saying that filing was a right of passage. Reminiscing on how he'd had to do filing back when he was a new - well, newer - agent.

Shadow, hate to break it to you, but that was over 200 years ago. With G.U.N. no less. You didn't know very much about the Commander's old organization, but you knew enough to see that they were corrupt and evil.

No wonder filing and paperwork was such a pain. It was inspired by the agency that almost took over the world.

    Figures.

Clicking the mouse absently at your terminal, you lazily flitted over the next file, skimming the words, not remembering anything. Then you blinked, and categorized it under "Irrelevant". If it wasn't, oh well.

"Another one to the trash," you mumbled.

"You're not really calling the folders that, are you?" a deep voice asked from across the room. You looked up, seeing the Commander himself resting on the doorframe. You smirked at him.

"You never know," you replied. "This stuff is so boring, remind me again why you're making me do it?"

Shadow only shifted, not gracing you with a response. You just rolled your eyes.

"You can't keep me doing this useless crap forever," you complained, slouching back in your chair. "Let me go do something cool for once."

Shadow snickered. You were probably the only agent within the system who could talk to him like that. After training with him for so long, you practically saw him as your older brother. Well, ancient brother really. With Shadow being immortal and all. Sometimes, you wondered how he had the will to keep living. You supposed the agency was the reason. He was able to start it, and would lead it, basically through all of time. He was certainly the best hedgie for the job.

"Your definition of 'cool' worries me," he said, responding to your earlier plea.

    "Why's that?" you pouted.

"Because 'cool' could get you killed. This job isn't for the faint of heart, (Y/n). You can't come here just to satisfy your adrenaline quota."

"You're right," you agreed. "I come here for justice."

You watched as Shadow's demeanor fell slightly. Two years ago, your parents had been killed in a gang shootout, leaving you an orphan at fourteen. That gang had been - and still was - a target of E.P.A.. They'd been doing a good job of remaining hidden, however.

Not wanting to be left alone in the unfamiliar setting of the orphanage, you'd run away a few days later, living on the streets, looking for any clues as to where your parents' murderers had gone. After all, you weren't the type to break down and cry in a corner. You wanted to know why. Why had they been killed? Why had you been left alone?

But instead of finding the crooks, or answers, the agency had found you. Seeing an opportunity, and knowing they had the resources you'd need, you had done a lot of convincing, near begging, before Shadow the Hedgehog finally agreed to train you to be a spy.

So, for the past two years, that's what you'd been doing. Training. And now you had a chance to avenge your parents. Shadow, however, knew of this motive, and you, knowing he knew, could understand why he was so careful to keep tabs on you.

    And it was downright annoying.

Thus, you'd learned to play the orphan card. He always felt guilty about it, blaming his lousy leadership as the reason the mob was able to attack you that day. You knew part of this 'orphan' tactic was wrong, but there were a lot of things unanswered about that case, your case, and sometimes, using that card gave you some leeway to doing more... profitable things.

"Please, Shadow," you said, dropping your act and becoming serious. The black hedgehog didn't look at you. "I know you feel bad, and I know you want to do something. I don't blame you. No one could've predicted what happened that night. But we're not going to get any farther if all I do is sit at a computer terminal all day. So let me help. Please, I can, I know I can."

"... I know you can, too," Shadow agreed after a moment. "I just don't want to see you getting hurt. Especially because we know so little about this case."

You sighed, rolling your eyes. Trust the big brothers to dote over the little sisters. Shaking your head, you dropped the topic. Most of these conversations ended this way. You, wanting to go out and try to find answers, and Shadow, telling you it was too dangerous because there was little to no factual info.

There was silence for a few moments, Shadow standing in the doorway, and you glaring at the files on your screen.

Finally, the hedgehog shifted again. "There's a small intel team out in the field right now," he told you. "Logan, Morgan, Bomber and Storm. Their trophy is intel on some small class drug dealers and sales. Low risk. If you want... you can mann the communications terminal."

Your eyes widened and you looked up at him. "Really?" you checked. He smiled slightly and nodded. You quickly stood up, shoving your chair back and racing over to hug him. The hedgehog tensed, not really one for physical affections. "Thank you!"

After releasing the Commander, he nodded to you. "I will be monitoring you," he warned. "No funny business." His crimson gaze challenged you.

"No funny business," you promised, raising your right hand. Shadow nodded again before turning around and leading you out towards the terminal. You smirked behind him, uncrossing your left fingers.

It was a low risk mission. And you were good friends with all of the people on the team. Besides, Shadow shouldn't be monitoring you too closely...
