My favourite movie of all time is Your name, which is a hill I'll die on and I'll probably make a chapter about that movie sometime. So when I found out that Makato Shinkai was making another movie I immediately wanted to see it. Unfortunately, I live in Norway. The problem with being a Norwegian anime fan is that it can be incredibly difficult to watch anime legally. I'm not kidding when I say that there is no legal streaming service that has Your name here. Pretty much the only anime movies that are shown at cinemas around the same time they are shown globally is Ghibli movies. Of course, those are great movies, but everything else is either shown incredibly late or not at all. For example, it took an entire year until I saw My hero academia: two heroes, and that was when it came on Netflix by a stroke of luck. The point is I had to wait several more months than most to see weathering with you.
So, in February I found out that a cinema that was roughly 4 hours away by car would show Weathering with you on 3rd of April. Better yet, an Italian relative had just moved near that city and also would like to see the movie. The stars were lined up. My siblings and my mother had all seen Your name and wanted to see this movie as well. We would drive up once school was finished, visit our relative and see the movie. But then a virus you've probably heard of by now began spreading in the country. So the government already hanging behind on their response closed down pretty much everything that gathered large crowds, cinemas included.
Now, a lot of small petty things has happened because of Covid-19. We had to cancel all planned trips, my tattoo appointment was postponed by three months and all exams have been cancelled (Oh no, the humanity). All of those things are fine, I'd rather have it so people are safe than me getting a tattoo. But out of all those things, having to forget about seeing Weathering with you is just the most infuriating. If I had lived in almost any other country in Europe, I would already have seen it and could be here talking about how great it is instead of how infuriating the situation is.
And that probably won't be the end of it. I highly doubt they will show Weathering with you on cinemas once they open which means waiting for home release. And home releases of anime in Norway takes forever. I really want to watch this movie legally, but fucking hell they make it hard. Like the Dutch gets to see it on one of their streaming services right now! The Dutch! It isn't even out in Japan I think.
So yeah, I was really looking forward to seeing this movie, and I'll probably gosh about it once I see it, but until then I can just look forward to it. Because it looks so fricking good! Just look.
Look at it!
The animation looks fucking phenomenal and dare I say better than any movie has made. Not to mention the music I've heard so far. Radwimps knows how to really make music. I haven't even watched the movie, but Grand escape still somehow makes me tear up a bit. The story also sounds really interesting and if anyone spoils anything I will kill them and their firstborn.
Not to mention one of my favourite parts in any Makato Shinkai movie, the rain.
There is just something about the rain in his movies, it just looks so good and Weathering with you doesn't seem to be an exception either. I hate getting wet from rain, but the rain in his movies just makes me want to be there and feel the rain falling.
I know complaining about not getting to see a movie because of a pandemic is really fucking petty of me. But everything about it just looks so good. I really hope I can see this movie as quickly as I can. Considering how slow these movies come to Norway I'll probably end up seeing it on Kissanime or similar. I'll buy it once I can, but it's not my fault if they can't release it as fast as the rest of the world.
If you have seen the movie, I hope you liked it. Otherwise, I hope you're all having a wonderful day. Goodbye.
