Before I begin talking about this masterpiece, I'll just give a quick update in regard to my weathering with you rant. While I'm aware that it is now available on sites like 9anime and kissanime, I won't watch it there. Because guess what. They decided to show it in cinemas after all! Which might be one the few truly good news so far this year. And the best part is that it'll probably run for a while since it has been the best received movie in Norway this summer. Something I'm really glad for. Maybe anime finally will start having a bigger presence here. Though, I still have to travel up to another city that is 3 hours away by car. If I'm lucky it will be the coming Thursday. But that also depends on if it works for a relative that lives there. Hopefully it will. If not, well... I'm watching this movie in the cinemas no matter what. Even if I have to get there myself.
Now, back to what is in my opinion, the best movie ever made. Your Name. And now, more than ever, if you haven't seen it. Do it right now. I don't care if you watch it on kissanime or rent it on iTunes. Just watch it, don't go a step further until you have done that. You won't regret it.
So recently we got our self a new TV, this time a 4K one. And so I decided to rewatch my favourite movie. I mean, it had been a few months since the last rewatch. And boy was it every bit as beautiful and wonderful as I remember it. I fall in love with this movie every time I watch it, and I can't explain why no matter how much I talk or write about this masterpiece. There are approximately over a million words in the English Language, and probably about the same amount in the Norwegian language too. But I could never string enough of those words together to properly express how much I love this movie. Despite this challenge, I'll try. I'll try to talk about all the things I love about the movies in the best way I can. It'll probably turn into a mess of topics with no continuity, much like my own thoughts. But I hope I can just ever so slightly express all the wonderful things I love in this movie.
Alright, where should I even begin? I mean, there is so much to say. I guess, maybe to emphasize how much Your name resonated with me is to talk about my first time watching it. Surprisingly, I came across it through a meme of all things. It was just a picture from the movie and someone mentioning the source in the comments. My most sincere thanks goes to that random stranger since that led to me watching the movie.
Now, I didn't expect it to be that great. I hadn't heard about Your name before and assumed it was just a decent film. I mean, there was no way it could be better than my favourite movie, or set of movies, at that time, the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Man was I wrong. This movie amongst many other things, did something to me that very few other pieces of media has done before.
Number one, it made me cry. Not tears of sadness, though that happened too, but also tears of joy and happiness. And Your name has done that to me every time I've watched the movie since. Crying from happiness is something that really sticks with me. And I can count the number of games, movies and books that has done that on one hand with room to spare. That number is 4. 2 games, 1 anime series and Your name. Of which, Your name sticks the most with me.
The other thing this masterpiece did to me the first time and is something that rarely happens. When the movie was finished, and the credits were rolling with nandemonaiya playing in the background. I just sat there, not really looking at anything, just thinking. Thinking about what I just watched and experienced. Again, this is something that rarely happens to me, but sometimes, after experiencing something so great, I just sit and think. Trying to sort my storm of thoughts out. I can count the number of times this has happened on two hands. Not an exact number, but I know it is less than 10 and more than 5.
Alright, time to talk about the actual movie. So, just to start with something, I'll mention the one thing about this movie that kind of annoys me. The first scene after the opening and dream lantern, we see Taki waking up in Mitsuha's body for the first time. This is good and all, but crashes with the next scene which takes place the next day, but still during the morning. But now, Mitsuha is back in her body. It isn't much, but it throws you off a bit, and I think it might have been better if it just started with Mitsuha having breakfast after the body swap the previous day. This is my one proper complaint about the movie. Everything else I love. So time to go through it all.
