"Hey Dad," Mason greeted, looking up from his bowl of corn flakes.

Mason is my child and only child. He is sixteen and what you would call the 'perfect child.' Usually a child would feel grateful to their parents, but in our situation it's completely different. Because of me, he grew up too quickly. He grew up too quickly, because I need him more than he needs me. And the worst part is that you can never just rebuild a kids childhood.

"You shouldn't even call yourself a fucking 'dad.'" I shook my head, and pushed all the negative thoughts back. They'll come back later though.

"Morning," I greeted back, opening the the fridge. I took out the milk and prepared myself a bowl.

"You look tired. Did you get enough sleep last night?" Mason asked. I knew he was concerned. He's always worried about me. A sixteen year old shouldn't be such a worry-wart. He should be hanging with his friends; playing sports or video games.

No. "Yes, I'm just not the morning type, remember?" I lied. His concerned expression morphed into a relieved one.

"That's good," he sighed.

"Dad, I have something important to tell you..." He said, nervously. He was wringing his fingers. He always does that when something is troubling him.

"Then tell me, it can't be that bad." I encouraged. I want him to be able to tell me anything, so I have to make him feel safe. It's the least I can do after all the hassle I caused him.

He took a deep breath and continued, "I have a girlfriend."

I dropped my spoon into the cereal bowl and gave him a look of disbelief, "what?"

"I know you told me n-"

"After everything I told you, you still believe in that crap?! Love gets you fucking nowhere!" I yelled angrily standing up from my seat. I was practically towering over him.

"Yes," he said, firmly staring up into my eyes. His eyes were filled with so much determination.

I sighed in defeat, "fine." I know this is a horrible mistake, but he seems so sure it isn't. "But, if you get hurt in the process, I already warned you. "

"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" He cheered as he shot up from his chair and embraced me into a tight hug expressing his gratitude. I awkwardly patted his back, "okay, okay! I get it!"

He pulled away with a giant smile on his face. "Dad, I really am thankful."

"Sure, whatever. Hurry up though, or else you're going to be late for school. " I reminded him.

"Aye, aye, captian Dad!" Mason saluted. I chuckled a bit and we both returned back to eating our cereals as if our little soap opera never occurred. Only for me it was just building up my anxiety for him.

What does he know about life? He's only sixteen for crying out loud! He hasn't even faced reality yet.

"He'll be fine. He's not you, Ashton. He's strong." I had to remind myself.
