A three year old Hawthorne made his way racing across the kitchen. "Slow down, mister," Eli scolded and the little boy gave him a guilty face before he listened. He was so full of energy all the time. Rose on the other hand, was quiet, like Eli. She preferred to sit and read while her brother ran circles around her.

I was thankful when Hawthorne turned 2 and his hair began to darken. He resembled me more than anything else, getting most of my face shape. You had to be searching to see Kayson in him. Rose was Eli's twin, aside from the lighter eye color. I almost laughed thinking how we never needed a paternity test for her older self. She was Eli's alright.

Eli was an amazing father to both of them. He never treated Hawthorne like he was anything less than his son. And as far as I was concerned, he was. Of course, if the subject ever came up, I'd tell Hawthorne the truth. About who his real father was, and what had happened with him.

The last I'd heard about Kayson was when he died. Or at least that's what I'd been told. That he'd been jumped and he lost a knife fight. I was never going back there to find out the true story. I felt bad that the thought of his possible death comforted me. I worried for the first year of my babies' lives that he would show up to hurt them. He never did, or even threatened us again. That never stopped my fear.

I became more comfortable the longer time went on. I worried the experience would make me a more paranoid parent. Especially as we were getting ready to discuss preschool. Christ, it felt like just yesterday, they were inside my stomach. Now they were getting ready to start school.

Luke came around the corner, scooping Hawthorne into the arms. He spun the boy around, causing Hawthorne to squeal with giggles. Both Luke and Patrick still lived with us. They both helped out a lot and the thought of us moving without them sounded crazy now. I don't think we could've done it without them. They were also still together, engaged now. I couldn't be more happy for them.

I turned to put dinner on the table and called my family to come eat. I looked around at everybody. Despite everything, we were so happy together. They were mine and I was theirs. I'm so happy that this was possible.

AN: And that's all folks. I'm so happy to have this story finally done and I hope you guys are too. Hopefully you liked the way it ended.
