Lucifer had always been a little bit wild, a little bit off center for someone with a father like he had. Military background with a strict set of rules Lucifer and anyone who worked with him had to follow.

Lucifer was used to it. The constant one sided fights where a simple ok could be taken as an insult, he tried to stay out of his way as much as possible and the easiest way to do that was volunteer for hunts.

Hunts were the only thing he could actually speak to his father about. It was also the only time he had to himself, could break away from the shell that had grown so hard that he wondered if there was anything left and if his father's rules had chipped all of him away but on hunts he could be reckless, he could be daring, he could make choices that his father normally would look down upon.

Hunts also did another thing, a thing he wasn't entirely aware of. It made him feel pain. He was reckless, anyone could tell you that but born from the recklessness; he had no regard for his own life and the pain he had from the encounters made him feel like his mind cleared for a moment, like he knew what was important but it would quickly fade and the only thing left was a reminder of the moment but also the reminder that he should be better. Getting hurt was as good as failure to him.

That's what he was thinking right at this moment. Why can't he be better? Why couldn't he just be like Michael. Michael could do all these things and it came so easy to him. Why was he so bad at everything he tried.

He hissed as he pushed the wet rag into the wound on his arm. It was a long gash but not that deep, he'd be fine as long as he could stop the bleeding and not get an infection, at least that's what he thought.

He poured more whiskey on the rag and cursed into the air for no one to hear. He hated this. The pain, but he couldn't help but come back to it. He deserved it, it would teach him to be better. He told himself that each time even though he knew that was a lie.

Sam watched for a moment as the dark thoughts circled almost audibly in the human's mind. He wasn't sure why he stopped, he was on his way to an errand for heaven. A simple run that needed to be dealt with but then he heard someone curse, obviously in pain but he wasn't meant to interfere. He wasn't meant to care.

He knew of Lucifer as he knew of all people. He heard how they would refer to him as a lost cause. That everyone knew where his path ends and as things stood, Sam could see it was going to come sooner rather than later.

Sam sighed. Quick in and out Sam told himself. This was supposed to be a quick run... It still could be, if only he flew away. No one would know he left the poor human in pain and neither would they care especially if they heard it was Lucifer.

Sam was never especially good with humans and neither their customs, mostly they were trivial in his mind so he didn't quite get that just walking through the door of the motel room Lucifer was staying in wasn't such a good idea. He was doing a good thing after all, helping was a good thing. How could anyone possibly find fault in that.

Sam walked purposefully, proudly as he was taught as an angel. Lucifer looked up as the door swung open, half expecting his father to be the one going to reprimand him but he wasn't entirely sure why his mind would expect that when he knew his father didn't really care for his well-being.

Given the situation it wasn't surprising that Lucifer was shocked for a moment, stuck in place. Part of the floor and most of the basin was covered in his blood, kind of hard  to hide and given that he wasn't sure who Sam was, he didn't know how to react. He knew he couldn't exactly let go of his bleeding arm but he had a sense he might be in danger because why else would someone break through what he was pretty sure was a locked door.
