I was just trying to teach my class! I didn't mean for it to all fall apart like this...
I should probably tell you who I am. My name is Devin Markette, Mr Markette to my students. I teach history at Westview high and everything was perfect until they transferred here. When I say they, I mean the camp kids. there was Annabeth, my prize student, she was incredibly intelligent, especially due to the fact she had ADHD and Dyslexia.
But it began to fall apart when he arrived, Percy Jackson, the bane of my existence. He distracted the whole class, cracking jokes and pranking me and the other teachers. He never handed in work and he just could not concentrate or listen! I was so done with him.
I began to look closer and discovered something strange, if you looked closely at Percy or Annabeth, you could see the tiny scars covering their bodies, dark looks in their eyes, and the need to always be touching each other, to always be near each other.
The real damage started when we began our greek mythology unit. We always start with the Gods and the Titans, and the whole time Annabeth and Percy would mutter. I'd say something like "Gaia was believed to have been one of the most beautiful titans of all time, she was the earth and protected it with her life." And Percy and Annabeth would shudder and then start snickering. Like they knew her or something, but that attitude stopped the second we moved onto the underworld.
It was a rainy Monday morning when we began covering it, as I had decided that my students would benefit from an interesting story. I began to tell them about Elysium, and the fields of punishment, all without noticing that Percy and Annabeth were sitting nervously at their corner desk, trying to brace themselves for what they knew was coming.
"Now let's move onto the other underworld, the one for greek monsters. Does anyone know the name?" I said. Percy held Annabeth tighter, his eyes dull.
"Tartarus." I was about to compliment the person in the back who said that when I heard the worst sound I have ever heard. A scream. A bloodcurdling, chilling scream. The scream of someone who has seen something no human should ever see. It was coming from Annabeth.
I looked over at her, everyone did, and saw her wrapped in Percy's embrace. There were tears running down both of their faces, and Annabeth was still screaming.
"PERCY, PERCY WHERE ARE YOU!? DONT LEAVE ME. PLEASE PERCY."
"Annabeth, it's okay, I'm here, we're safe, we're out, we're okay," Percy muttered into her hair, still crying.
I did the only thing I could, and ushered everyone out of the classroom. Even in the hallway, we could hear them, whispering to each other. Twenty minutes later, when the crowd that had gathered around the classroom went away, I walked back into the classroom. In the classroom sat Annabeth and Percy, still wrapped in each others arms. I cleared my throat.
"Erm... I know you're still having a moment, but I would like to know what happened just then."
They jumped apart and Percy walked up to me.
"Mr Markette, I know you probably have heaps of questions, but I don't really want to talk about it." He said, and he rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.
"But I need to know, otherwise I can't be sure it won't happen again," I argued.
In response, he grabbed out and unusual phone with a green back and dialled a number.
"Hey Hazel. Yeah, I'm good. Look, I need you to help me with something. Yeah. Nah. Yeah. Okay. Bye Hazel." He hung up and looked at me.
"You were just saying goodbye, right Mr Markette?" he asked me, and suddenly I forgot why I was there, or what I was doing.
"Bye, Percy, Annabeth," I said, confused. and then I walked out of the room.
It was only when I got into bed that night that I remembered the screaming, but I knew to never pursue it
