after a couple of minutes, i hear a siren go off in the distance. i turn my head, seeing a police boat coming toward our way. "shit, jj." i grab his attention.
"fuck, i'm not allowed to be seen in the marsh, guys." i say, nervously running my shaky hands through my hair. "come here." jj says, grabbing my hand. "stay near me."
"oh, you gotta be kidding me." pope mumbles.
"yep, that's the police." jj confirms, tightening the grip on my hand. "just act freakin' normal." kie says. the siren blares as they pull up next to us.
"evening, officers." pope greets.
"evening." the deputy says. pope grabs the rope that the other officer held out, and gives it to jj. "jj, tie it off." i remove my hand from jj's and he ties the rope to our boat.
"how you kids doin'? you know the marsh is closed?" the deputy asks.
"really?" i ask as the other boys say, "no. wow."
"i didn't know that." jj says.
"wh-why is it closed?" i stutter, jj grabs my hand again, attempting to calm me down. "well, we're conducting a search out here. a boat went down." the officer explains.
"oh."
"seen anything?" the deputy asks.
i shake my head as pope and jj speak up. "nope."
"no."
the deputy glances over to me, "where's your brother? the one you always hang out with. he here?" he asks me. i shakily breathe out, shaking my head, "no, he's working." i smile at the officer.
the deputy nods his head, "hm. i'm gonna check your little boat out."
i let go of jj's hand, walking toward the back of the boat, behind the bench of the steering wheel. "yeah, hop on board." pope says, standing up from the bench. "you wanna- uh, check- check her out." pope stammers.
"thank you." the officer looks around for a moment, then travels to the front of the boat. he grabs a life jacket, "you got another one of these?" he asks.
"yeah, yeah." pope nods.
"of course. it's, uh.. it's in the hold." jj tells him, kiara stands up from the hold, "show him." she says.
