I was currently sitting in the living room, bored out of my mind. What to do? What to do? Suddenly I had an idea. I walked to the hall closet and searched for the blue and white shoebox I knew was up there. AHA! I found it. Carefully, I lowered the box down, being sure to not hit my head. Groaning, I succeeded without harming myself. I walked back over to the pristine white couch that sat in front of our glass coffee table. Seeing the box down on the table,I opened up the lid to discover the contents inside. I moved some things around and finally got to the item I was looking for. It was a blue and white book with lace covering it. Janine Mason was scrawled beautifully on the cover. I opened it and logged at the first page. Lincoln Elementary School - August 17,1994. Kindergarten. It was a school picture. Underneath in my sloppy scrawl was written The first time I ever laid eyes on him. I saw a picture of little 6 year old me with a cheesy grin in a blue flowered dress. I smiled as the memories came rushing back to me.-begin flashback-
"Mama, can you put my hair in pigtails pretty please?" It was my first day of school and I was so scared, yet so excited. It was also picture day. I smoothed down the pretty blue dress my mom had bought me a couple weeks ago during back to school shopping. My mom glanced down at me from her spot at the stove. "Sure, Janine, just let me finish these eggs and then I will." I smiled happily then ran up the stairs to my bedroom to make sure I had everything ready. Once I reached my bedroom I grabbed my pink backpack of the floor where I had placed it last night and set it on my bed. Then I searched for my black strappy shoes and lacy white socks. Once I found those I put them in and bounded down the stairs just in time for my mom to call me for breakfast. I sat down at the table and noticed the brush and rubber bands that were sitting next to my plate. "Baby, just eat and I will do your hair. Ok?" I just nodded and began eating my breakfast. "Are you excited for your first day baby?" My mom asked as I ate and she brushed through my hair. I just nodded and continued eating. "Alright, sweetie. Time to go." We got in the car and headed to the school. Once we arrived we saw all the parents waiting with their children. We saw a pretty lady with sparkly green eyes and pretty brown hair. She saw us and smiled. "Hi! You must be Mrs. Mason." My mom smiled. " Ms. Mason" she corrected. The teacher then looked down. "And you must be Janine." I nodded and his behind my mom's leg. The teacher then kneeled so that she was at my level. "Well hi Janine. I'm Mrs. Janice and I'm going to be your teacher. I logged at her and my mom. "Ok Janey. Time to go with Mrs. Janice. I'll be back later to pick you up. I love you. Have a good day sweetheart." My mom kneeled down to give me a hug. "Love you too mama." I said quietly. She then stood up and went to the car. Mrs.Janice grabbed my hand. "Come on Janine, let's go meet the rest of your classmates." We walked for a bit then finally turned into a classroom with a bunch of kids and toys and a big chalkboard. I looked around and saw a kid with big brown eyes and a bowl cut looking around the room with wide, scared eyes. "Go and sit with the other kids Janine." Mrs.Janice instructed. With a smile she turned around and I went to sit in a corner by myself. "Alright class. Let's do role call then we can play some more." Looking down at a piece of paper she started listing names. "Joseph Jonas?" She called. "Here" said a shy little voice. I looked to see the kid with the big brown eyes that had been sitting by himself earlier. "Janine Mason?" She called. "Here" I said in a squeaky voice. The rest of the kids names were called and then the teacher gave us permission to play. "Hi. My name is Joseph. You can call me Joe. What's your name?" The little boy with the big eyes asked. "Janine" I answered simply. "Can I call you Janey?"he asked. I nodded. "My mommy calls me Janey." I added. "Wanna play?" He asked. I nodded again. The rest of the day flew by and before I knew it I was outside waiting for my mom standing next to Joe. "Mommy!" I screamed when I saw her and then threw myself into her arms. "Hey honey. Let's get to the car and then you can tell me all about your day." I nodded while she set me down and we made our way to the car. Once we got settled and were headed home she asked "Honey, how was your day? Did you make any new friends?" I smiled wildly and nodded. "Well what's their name?" She pressed. "His name is Joseph but he said I can call him Joe." Mom smiled as she let me out of the car and I made my way upstairs to change and put my things away. Once back downstairs mom and I spent the rest of the day together. That night I went to sleep with a smile on my face, thinking about my first friend.
-end flashback-I smiled widely at the memory. I yawned then decided to take a nap. Still smiling I was thinking about my first friend in school who would later mean so much more. He would bring me so much happiness and pain.
