CHAPTER ONE

Kairu can’t imagine living his life without his beloved girlfriend by his side. Janina has been his counterpart since college. Isa ito noon sa pinakasikat na miyembro ng Honor Society sa unibersidad na pareho nilang pinapasukan. Bukod sa pagiging isa sa pinakamahusay sa kurso nito ay isa din itong beauty queen. She was crowned Ms. University of the Philippines 2009.
He met her the first time at the backstage of their auditorium sevenyears ago. He was a second year business management student and Janina is a second year med student. Isa siyang performer at emcee naman ito para sa program sa school ng panahong iyon which is the foundation day. She was so beautiful that it left him no choice but to confess to her right there and then. Thank God he was her apple of the eye. Madali niya itong napaibig at naging nobya dahil sa legal niyang panliligaw dito. Even her parents and sisters loved him. Si Janina naman ay lalo pang napamahal sa kanya dahil sa sobrang kabaitan nito. Mapag alaga din ito kaya bagay na bagay dito ang pagiging doktor.Speaking of his adored lady, nakaharap ito ngayon sa isang medical record at mula ng dumating siya galing sa Delight ay hindi pa siya nito nakakausap.
“Can I have a minute babe?”
“Just a second.”
“You’ve said that five times.”
“I’m just curious at this child’s condition. It was a miracle he survived the accident.”

“Kai if you’re tired you can lie down there.”  Itinuro nito ang sofa na nasa gilid ng kwarto katapat ng mesa nito. Pero natuon ang kanyang atensyon sa magandang mukha nito na may bahid na ng pagod. Ibinaba na nito ang mga hawak na medical records at inilagay sa folder.
“Have you been up all night studying these cases?”
“Yes.” Nangalumbaba ito at ngumiti. “Maybe I could do miracles too.”
“You’re doing it already.” He said smiling while reaching for her face
“What?”
“You’re making this work only with your smile.” He said pointing his chest.
“Talaga?” she reaches for his hand and hold it tight.
“Yes. So never forget to smile okay? I love you so smile.”
“I love you so let’s go home. I know you’re tired too.” Umikot ito sa mesa papunta sa harap niya without breaking the union of their hands.
“Thank God! After three hours of sitting. My legs hurt.” Mahigit pa sa tatlong oras ang lumipas mula nang dumating siya doon para sunduin ito. Nasa kalagitnaan ito sa pagbisita sa kwarto ng bawat isang batang pasyente nito kaya pinaupo na lamang muna siya nito sa opisina. Tambak na trabaho sa opisina niya, expansion ng Delight at ang gig lang naman ang hinarap niya ng araw na ito kaya talagang kaylangan niya ng energizer. Nagkataon nga lang na mas workaholic pa sa kanya ang energizer niya ngunit sulit pa din kapag nakikita niya ito.
“Sorry, you know my work.”
“Its fine. Im proud of you.” He kissed her hand while they were walking on the quiet corridor. “Im proud of this hand. Im proud of Ms. Janina Samaniego and will be Mrs. Kairu Montanez”
“Shhh! Wag kang maingay baka may makarinig!”
“Bakit? Ayaw mo pa talaga?” naharap niya ito nang bigla itong tumamlay.
“Kai naman...”
“I know, I know. You’re just starting to discover the wonderful world of medicine. Eventhough it’s been five years since you’ve become a professional pediatrician.”  Pain is heard his voice.
“Kai, pareho tayong pagod. Wag muna nga nating pag usapan ang mga ganyang bagay ha?”
“Kahit naman hindi tayo pagod you wouldn’t talk with me about that topic.”
“Of course not!”
“That’s what would happen I can see it already.”
“Okey okey! You talk. I will listen.” Bimitiw ito sa kanya at humalukipkip.
“No. I want to hear your thoughts. I won’t do the talking alone.”
“Marami pa namang panahon para pag usapan yan Kairu!” that’s it. Sinabi na nito ang pangalan niya, meaning wala talaga ito sa mood para makipag usap. He backed down.
“I’m sorry. I just got carried away.” Inakbayan na lamang niya ito at nanahimik na siya hanggang sa makarating sila sa kotse. Tahimik pa din ito nang sagutin niya ang tawag ng ka banda niya habang nagmamaneho siya.Isinuksok niya sa tenga ang headset at itinodo ang volume noon.
“Zup Jigz? It’s not like you calling at this hour.” Its five minutes to midnight.
“Happy collapsed! Oh God! Nag inom kasi siya. W-We all know her condition but I still let her drink. I’m an idiot!”
“Hey, relax! Baka mamaya ikaw na ang mag collapse dyan. Nasan kayo? Bakit kasama mo pa siya? ”
“Birthday daw kasi niya eh. She’s lonely and she asked for a drink. Nalingat lang ako naubos na pala niya yung T-ice. Shit! I shouldn’t have let her touch a glass! Damn it! ”
“Understood na yun, sabog ka rin kasi, tsk. Nasa Delight kayo?”
“Nasa hospital na kami. She’s still asleep. Oh God.”
“Relax dude! Lasing siya, malamang tulog nga siya.”
“But she’s not answering me. Ilang beses ko na siyang ginising pero wala pa din.”
“Bangang ka ba? Edi ang sakit ng ulo niya kung magigising siya. Wag mo na nga siyang guluhin at pabayaan mo siya magpahinga.”
“But Kairu… What if something would happen? She has a weak heart and… ”
Ito ang unang beses na narinig niya ang kakaibang tono nito. Parang gusto niya tuloy kumanta ng awit ng mga anghel para pagaanin ang loob nito.
“Jigz. Ano bang sabi ng doktor?” maya maya ay tanong niya.
“Stable na raw ang kondisyon niya.”
“Retarded ka din eh no? Umayos ka nga diyan at bantayan mo na lang siya para may magawa kang maganda. Hindi yung dinala dala mo pa siya sa hospital hindi ka naman pala naniniwala sa doktor.”
“Okey. Haaaaaaaay.. Tama ka. Bakit ka pa kasi tumawag eh.”
“Lul! Ikaw ang tumawag sakin.”
“Ay ganun ba ? Siya sige na nga.” Tinapos na nito ang tawag.
“What happened?” Janina asked after a few minutes.
“Happy, a friend and of the band got admitted on the nearby hospital. Pinabayaan ni Jigz. The lady collapsed after drinking a bottle of alcohol.” Napapailing na kwento niya.
“Wow. Si Jigz talaga yung nag papanic sa kabilang linya? The world must be ending tomorrow.”
“No. The world can’t end tomorrow. Not until you’re not mad at me.”
“I am not mad Kai. I’m just tired. Sorry na...Forgive please…”
“I don’t wanna go to bed mad at you. And I don’t want you to go to bed mad at me.. Oh no no no…” kanta niya.  Inabot ni Janina ang kanyang braso at niyakap iyon. Sumandal din ito sa kanyang balikat bago nag salita.
“Kairu thank you for understanding me.”
“You’re welcome.”
“Thank you din sa pag aadjust mo sa mood swings ko.”
“You’re welcome again”
“You’re the best boyfriend a girl would have.”
“Thank you for that.”
“Niloloko mo na ako eh!”
“Of course not! I never thought of that even in dreams.” Pinalo siya nito sa braso bago ito kumanta.
“I love the way you love me. Strong and wild, slow and easy. Heart and soul, so completely I love the way you love me.”
“Babe, I love you and your voice.”
“Oo na tatahimik na ako. Ang yabang nito.”
“What?”
“Nilalait mo ko Kairu.”
“Ofcourse not. I was actually complementing you.”
“Ikaw na ang may offer na album sa ibang bansa.”
“Hmm, I thought were done with that?”
“Naalala ko lang.”
“Don’t you worry I’m not leaving you.”
“But… do you think you wouldn’t regret giving that up for.. me?”
“No I would not regret anything. And if the time comes that I need to choose between you and my career, I would choose you. Hands down and all.”

“Your very much welcome.”
“Ayan ka na naman.”
“Sabi ko lang your welcome eh. Kumanta ka na nga lang ulit.”
“No.”
“Pleaseeeeeee… Sing for me. Babe.”
“N-no…”
“Kakanta na yan! Kakanta na yan! Sing a song for me baby.”
“Next time. If my voice would turn out like Elisha’s voice. Maybe we could do a duet.”
“Sinabi mo yan ha? Bukas na bukas mage enroll ka sa studio niya.”
“Sabe na eh. Nilalait mo nga ako kanina. And now youre recommending a voice lesson to me. What a guy!”
“I didn’t mean to offend. I just want you to sing for me.”
“O sige na nga…” tumikhim pa ito bago nagsimulang kumanta. “And we could build this dream together. Standing strong forever. Nothings gonna stop us now~”
“And if this world runs out of lovers. We’ll still have each other. Nothings gonna stop us , nothings gonna stop us now~” sumabay na siya dito kumanta.
Napangiti siya nang maramdaman ang pagtutok ng mata nito sa kanya.
“I know. You still can’t believe how handsome your boyfriend is.”
“Alam mo bang masama ang magbuhat ng sariling bangko?”
“Yes but you know I’m not lying.” Natawa na lang ito.
“ I just can’t believe… we made it after many years.”
“Yeah me too.”
“You’ve been so loving and understanding to me and to my needs.”
“That’s how it should be.”
“I-”
Biglang nag ring ang cellphone nito agad naman nito iyong sinagot.
“Hello.What? Yes. I’ll be right there.” Bumaling ito sa kanya bago nagsalita.
“I need to get back to the hospital.”
“What? You’re just out for fifteen minutes and-”
“Kai listen! A child is dying there. I can’t just go home and let her suffer when I know I can do something.” Nag U turn siya bilang pag sunod dito.
“Bakit? Ikaw lang ba ang doctor don?”
“No, but she’s my patient.”
“Pero hindi naman ikaw ang naka duty ngayon hindi ba?”
“I still need to be there, I know her condition.”
“You need to rest you know.”
“That can wait.”
“Of course not! Paano kung ikaw naman ang magkasakit dahil sa ginagawa mo?”
“Oh please Kai. Wag na nating pagtalunan to! Buhay ng isang bata ang nakasalalay sa pagbalik ko.”
Natahimik na lamang siya sa sinabi nito. Kailan nga ba niya ito napilit na magpahinga sa trabaho? Hindi ito makikinig sa kanya lalo na kung may pasyenteng nanganganib ang buhay at kapag ganoon ang nagaganap sa paligid he would be invisible on her eyes.
