Wallace Monument

Stirling

Even though Kenny and the Secret Service were against it, Jack and Jackie were insistant on climbing the steep road on Abbey Craig to get to the Wallace Monument.

The monument honoured the Guardian of Scotland: William Wallace and his bravery and courage in defending Scotland against England in the Wars of Independence.

Jack and Jackie, both dressed in black climbed the road with the Mayor of Stirling as he described the life of William Wallace and how he is remembered and honoured in Scotland.

"He was given a knighthood because of his bravery" The mayor told the President and First Lady. "In that case, he deserves all this honour" Jack replied. The mayor seemed fascinated. He had never known a President and First Lady to be so interested in his home country's history.

"I've been reading up on William Wallace and Mary Queen of Scots" Jackie told the mayor. He seemed extremely happy. When they got to the viewing point outside the museum, the Mayor pointed over to Stirling Castle.

The old Stuart castle, that was a favourite residence of Scottish monarchs, including Mary Queen of Scots appealed to Jack and Jackie. Only because they had been reading up on them.

Upon entering the tower, Jackie was insistant on climbing to the top. After climbing up the 246 steps, the First Couple gasped and took in the peaceful view of Stirling. "John would love it up here" Jackie smiled as she looked down on the ground. As she began to experience a small bit of vertigo, she looked back up.

Jack was fascinated by everything. Jackie was left on her own to look about as the Mayor and the President were deep in conversation about the country's National Hero.
