SEE Y'ALL

It was a quiet, warm evening in the Monarch Discovery Center.

The sunset streamed dim, orangey light through the opaque windows, where beautiful butterflies fluttered in the trees that were in the Butterfly Sanctuary.

Nestled in the arms of one dark, brooding oak tree, a small white cocoon dangled from a branch, its dry, papery shell rustling from the evening breeze.

Dr. Geoff Wigington watched the cocoon intently from his high hanging chair, as he knew that magic was to take place very soon.

And indeed it did, for while Geoff watched, a small crack appeared in the cocoon.

Geoff reached inside his duffel and pulled out his camera and voice recorder, positioning the two so that they were focused on the butterfly.

"Look closely." he spoke softly into the recorder. "We are witnessing the miracle of life- the birth of a butterfly. Now watch, and let the magic happen."

Geoff zoomed in, and watched as the cocoon broke apart, and a butterfly slipped out of the flaw in the cocoon's seam.

Having gotten all of the footage that he needed, Geoff tucked his camera and recorder into his bag, and gazed at the little insect.

The butterfly gently unfurled his wings and gently moved around in a circle, as if uncertain about the world around it.

Geoff cupped his right hand and gently picked up the butterfly, gazing at it in a childlike wonder.

"Hey, honey." he murmured quietly to it. "Are you ready?"

The butterfly shook his wings out and stretched them to dry in the fading warmth of the sun, its wings weak and damp from the conditions that it had been living in.

Brendon took a finger and gently stroked its head, and the creature turned its head up at him in curiosity, as if wondering who this doe-eyed human was.

"C'mon, babe." Geoff urged it on in a whisper. "You can do it. I can believe in you."

"Besides." he continued, "look at your family!"

He pointed up at all the butterflies flying in the trees. "See? You're the last one to hatch, my honey. They're waiting for ya."

The butterfly sat in his hands for a minute, but then it took off and soared up into the rafters of the Monarch Discovery Center.
