I woke up to the blaring sounds of an alarm clock. I squinted through my brown orbs, scratched my poopy brown locks and looked around. Shed clothing, a messy desk, an oddly placed fish tank- a boy's room I figured. I grunted, wiping the crust from my eyes. But which boy?
Suddenly I became aware of the body next to me. I turned to my side to see a tan, muscular back and a head full of bleached hair- it needed purple shampoo if you asked me. There was only one boy that fit the mold.
Suddenly memories of last night came rushing back to me. I was at a bar, drinking a liquor of some kind (tequila maybe) when the bartender revealed that my drink was paid for by the handsome man in the back. Next thing you know we were shedding our clothes, bodies pressed against another, lips on lips... My memory faded away as the massive body flipped around towards me.
Ah, yes. Cameron Heath.
"Good morning, mate." His Australian accent flowed between his words. "Sorry 'bout that alarm there." He smiled.
"It's fine."
I turned away, knowing he wouldn't like that. He softly grabbed my shoulder and swiveled me back towards him.
"How'd you sleep?"
I shrugged. He blinked- boys like him weren't used to apathy towards them. They always gained non-stop praise from girls all around, boosting their egos with every little hint of approval.
Before he could protest, his phone pinged on my side of the bed. I grabbed his phone and read the message aloud.
"Melissa says 'GM, on my way up. Hope ur awake'. Who's Melissa?"
His head jerked, neck and shoulders tensing up.
"Shit," He muttered to himself. He hopped out of the bed, almost falling over from his hangover. He pressed his fingers to his temples, regaining his balance. "Shit."
"Are you gonna answer my question, or-"
"You gotta hide." He made his way to the studio apartment door, peeking through the peephole. "Fuck, she's right there."
"What do you mean hide?"
"In the closet or something. She's coming."
"Cameron, what are you talking about."
"My girlfriend, Melissa!" He snapped. I stood there and scoffed, knowing my slowness would sting.
"You have a girlfriend? Wow. Classy."
"Piper. Get. In. The. Closet. Now"
"Fine. But just so you know, I'm getting in the closet because I want to, not because you told me to."
"Okay, I don't care! Just go!"
"Fuck me," I mumbled, hopping in the nearby closet. As soon as my door closed, another one opened.
"Melissa! Hey, babe." I heard the smooch of a kiss.
"Hey. Just wanted to drop off breakfast for ya." Her words seemed to bounce with each new word. It was insufferable. But also, familiar.
"A breakfast burrito?"
"God no, those things are so bad for you." I heard the crunching of an unfolding paper bag. "Avacado toast."
"Yay..." He unenthusiastically sang.
The Melissa girl plopped herself on his bed and scoffed.
"When are you gonna move out of this place, Cam? It's literally one room."
"It's comfy."
"It's cramped." What a bitch. "Like, you know I can't go around telling people we're dating if you live in a closet. I have a reputation, people expect things of me."
"Babe, babe." The squeak of his bed let me know he sat down right next to her. I squinted between the shutters of the closet. Dark hair, tan skin- that's all I got from this "Melissa" girl.
"Nobody cares who Melissa Harrington is dating, okay?"
I slapped my hand across my mouth, keeping myself from screaming.
Melissa. Fucking. Harrington.
Suddenly the annoying bounce in her voice hit me like a truck. I was surprised I didn't realize soon enough, that voice haunted me at my darkest, loneliest times.
As I lowered my hand, I grazed the doorknob, sending the door to slowly swing open. Melissa and Cameron's head snapped towards me, Melissa jumping up. Oops.
"What the fuck. Who the fuck is this?! Cameron what the fuck!"
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, calm down, it's not what you think-"
"Really? Because what I think is that you and this rando girl slept together!"
I rolled my eyes. Of course, she didn't remember me, her brain isn't big enough for that.
"Cameron, are you cheating on me?"
"No, I'm not cheating! Like, continually. This was a one-time thing, babe, I swear."
"Oh my god." She threw her hands up in exasperation. I sighed.
"Listen. I know you guys are on track for a major argument, I'm talking brink of breakup, yelling, tears, the whole shebang- but I'd like to skip it," I started to gather my belongings. "I wish you guys well but-"
"No," Melissa scoffed. "You're not just gonna waltz in here, fuck my boyfriend, and then leave unscathed. Do you know who I am? I'm-"
"Melissa Harrington. Yeah, I know who you are, we were friends in middle school, if the three tiny brain cells bobbing around in your skull can even comprehend that."
She froze, scanning me with her dark eyes, studying. Then it clicked.
"Piper Grass. It's been a while, huh."
"I guess. So, I'll be on my way-"
"Oh no. No, no, Piper, you don't get to walk away."
"Melissa..." Cameron tried, stepping towards her, but she ignored him. She stepped up to me until we were face to face, so close that I could feel her cold breath.
"You're going to regret this. You messed with the wrong one." She stepped back, giving way for me to exit. For a second I stood there, waiting for her to pounce, yet she was still. I took my chance to leave.
"Alright have fun," I muttered, making my way out of that hellhole.
As I closed the door behind me and traveled to my car, I couldn't shake this feeling that something was missing. That was a threat- she threatened me, but she did nothing. Almost as if she had some devious mastermind plan that would play out later. I didn't know whether to be scared or not.
Not until I entered my car.
As soon as I closed the door shut, my phone beeped: a reminder. I read the pop up once, then twice just in case I read it wrong. But no, I read it right the first time, and at that moment, I dropped my phone from shock.
Tonight was Purge Night: The night where for 12 hours straight all crime is legal, including murder.
I pissed off the wrong girl on the wrong night.
