Michael took the oppurtunity of my mom noticing our linked hands to give me a kiss on the cheek. I refrained from giving him a glare. "Mom, this is Michael. He's my, um, boyfriend," I manage to tell her. She smiled and introduced herself as Mrs. Vail, like I had expected her to. I half-dragged him inside to meet the rest of my family.

Of course the two older sisters, Anna and Julia, were arguing about something stupid and my dad was watching some little kid cartoon with my youngest sister, Lisa. My mom yelled, "Come say hello to Lara and her boyfriend. He has bright hair." The rest of my family stopped what they were doing and jumped up to greet us. My dad was first and shook Michael's hand firmly. I could tell he was kind of nervous so I gave him a smile that caused him to smile, too. "How long have you two been dating?" my dad said, already starting with the questions. We both look at each other and say different answers. I answer with "2 months" and he says "3 months." Michael then looks very anxious as I say, "Well, we've been friends for a while but I guess we dont know exactly when things became official." Wow, I'm smooth. We probably should have thought of what we wanted to say. My dad totally buys it, though. He introduces himself  as Mr. Vail. Then my three younger sisters introduces themselves, too. I could tell Anna thought Michael was hot or something by the way she looked at him. I found that very funny and made a mental note to make fun of her later. I gave my sisters hugs and lugged the bags into the house

I think Michael had more bags than I did. All the suit cases were put in the game room since mine was taken over after I moved out. My mom then said, " Lara, you can sleep on the pull out bed in here and Michael can sleep on the couch in the living room." I didn't expect my parents to even consider letting us stay in the same room because we're "together." Michael and I both said something along the lines of "ok" and walked into the kitchen where food was ready.

We helped put the food out on the big dining room table that was only used for special occasions and holidays and got our plates. I sat at the end of the table with Michael next to me. Of course my dad sat in front of Michael and my mom on his other side. The three kids took the remaining chairs.

We began to eat as the inevitable awkward conversation started. "So, what made you dye your hair red?" my mom blurted suddenly. "Oh my gosh, mom," I interrupt. Michael replies with," It's ok, Lara. Um, I don't know. My hair has been a lot of colors and I just thought it was time for red." My dad butts in with, "So, what do your tattoos mean?" I cover my face with my hands and sigh loudly. "Honestly, I got them because I thought they were cool, but they remind me of certain times in my life."

Then the conversation went into how we met. I took over and said that he worked at a cafe I go to a lot. I didn't mention the fact we lived in the same complex nor that he moved in with me recently. I'm pretty sure everything went smoothly until Michael went to take a drink of his water and spilt it. It went in my direction and got on my jeans. My "boyfriend" accidently whsipered a curse word under his breath as he stood up and apologized multiple times. I stated, " It's fine, it's only water. I'm going to go change." He seemed embarrassed when he went to help my mom clean up the water and I immediately regretted leaving him with my parents.

To get away from everyone, I took Michael on a walk around my old neighborhood. I was tired of all the interrogation. He was happy to get out of the house, too. "Larry, we're going to have to get married because I don't think I could go through that again," he states. I laugh and say, "I told you they were probably going to be brutal." "Yeah, your dad gave me the boyfriend talk while you went to change." I gave a mortified look to him and ask, "What did he say?" "He first asked me if I was going to treat you right and all that stuff. Then he started talking about how he would be very upset with me and wouldn't mind going to prison if anything happened. And finally, he gave me the speech about if I get you pregnant he will personally cut my balls off if we're not married." "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. I knew I shouldn't have left you with my parents. But my mom did tell me she approves of you and that dad does, too. Of course he wasn't going to tell you that," I say while smiling.

He grabs my hand while we're walking towards the neighborhood park. I pull him into a run as we head to the swings. "Clifford, will you push me?" I ask. He stands in front of me and says, "Only if you go to dinner with me sometime when we get back, but like, on a date." He has his arms crossed over his chest, defiantly, like a little kid, but he still looks nervous. I stand up from the swing and walk over to  him. I mumble an obviously-sarcastic "no" as I stand on my tippy toes to kiss him. He is startled but happily kisses me back.

A few seconds later I hear clapping and I turn around to my sister, Anna, with the younger ones. Anna says with a smile on her face, "Mom told me to take them to the park so I could spy on you."
