"Where are you off to?" Jasmine asked Samantha.
Jasmine had just walked into the room when Samantha was about to leave. She'd hoped to be gone before Jasmine got back, but she hadn't been able to decide what to wear. Classic date problem.
"I'm not really sure." Samantha said, trying to decide what to do with her hair.
"What?" Jasmine asked, tossing her bag on her bed as she moved to stand next to Samantha.
"On a date, but I don't know where he's taking me." Samantha was trying to keep her voice casual to keep Jasmine from asking more questions, but she knew she wasn't succeeding.
Jasmine raised her eyebrows. "That's cute. Who are you going out with? And leave your hair down." She said, knocking Samantha's hand away from her hair tie. "You always put it up."
"Thanks." Samantha said, avoiding Jasmine's gaze.
"So?" Jasmine prodded.
"Just a guy." Samantha said.
Jasmine rolled her eyes and smirked. "You're not going to tell me who it is?"
"Nope." Samantha tossed her friend a grin and headed towards the door.
"Have fun." Jasmine called with a small wave.
Samantha sent her a wink and let the door shut behind her.
She met Dawson by the front of the school. He was leaning against the wall, spinning his keys around his finger. He looked lost in thought, but when she approached, he looked up and his lips spread into a wide smile.
"Sam."
"Dawson." Samantha copied his tone giving him a cheeky grin.
"Ready?" He held his hand out to her.
She accepted his hand and said, "Sorry, I'm late. I had wardrobe problems."
Dawson laughed. "Well, it looks like it all worked out. You look great."
"Thank you." Samantha said, blushing just a bit. They found Dawson's car and Samantha said, "You know, we were a lot closer to my car. I could have driven."
"But you don't know where we're going." Dawson pointed out.
"You could tell me." Samantha argued.
"Where's the fun in that?" Dawson asked.
She had no answer for that.
Samantha played DJ while they drove and she had fun deciphering Dawson's taste in music from his facial expressions. He rarely hated a song enough to say anything out loud, but every once in a while she would play a song and he would wrinkle his nose in distaste. Sometimes she would get very lucky and he would quietly sing along.
The car slowed and Dawson turned into a field with a giant screen set up in it.
Samantha gasped. "Is this a drive-in movie?"
"Yep." Dawson said, with a smile.
"Oh man, I love these!" Samantha danced around in her seat in excitement as she
looked out the window. "I didn't know they were still around."
"There's not many left." Dawson said, as they paid and pulled into a spot. "That's why we had to drive a bit."
"That's alright. I like driving." Samantha said. As they hopped out of the car to get snacks, Samantha asked. "What are we watching?"
"I can't remember the exact title. It's a scary movie."
"What?" Samantha whipped her head around to look at Dawson.
"What?" He grinned. "You don't like scary movies?"
"I do, but now I'm going to be scared all night."
Dawson laughed. "We'll do something fun afterward to get your mind off of it."
"Alright, I'm good with that." Samantha said as they settled back into the car. She scooched down in her seat until she was sure she wouldn't be attacked from behind.
Dawson looked at her, amusement twinkling in his eyes. "What are you doing?"
"I can't leave my back vulnerable to the monsters." Samantha said as if that should have been obvious.
Dawson snorted and looked over his shoulder, sweeping his eyes over the backseat. "No monsters."
"Not yet." Samantha said.
Laughing, Dawson scooted down to get on her level, earning a grin from Samantha.
Once the movie started and the lights went out, Samantha knew she was going to lose all semblance of dignity. She was already freaked out and looking over her shoulder every other minute. She did jump periodically throughout the movie, using Dawson's shoulder to hide behind, much to his amusement. At one point, she used his hand to cover her eyes and Dawson was laughing so hard Samantha tried to glare at him only to jump back to his side a moment later.
Dawson murmured an apology, his eyes still sparkling with humor, as he pulled her closer to him. Samantha knew he wasn't really sorry but if she was being completely honest she really didn't mind the excuse to be snuggled up to him.
