"Ah, Caroline, I wanted to talk to..."
"Where's Rebekah?" she asks, not caring about Elijah's offended look as she interrupt him.
She sees a flash of realization cross his face as her harsh tone and the fury that is radiating off her register, and he quickly steps in front of her, blocking her path to his sister's room.
"She's not here," he says firmly before his voice turns soft and tentative, a result of his taking note of the blood on her pants. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine," she says through gritted teeth. "Never better. When will she be back?"
He disregards her question and places one hand on her shoulder, the other tilting her chin up to make her really look at him for the first time since she stormed in.
"What happened?"
She shakes him off, and her demeanor softens a little when he lets her.
"Did you know what your sister was up to?" she asks instead of answering him.
She thinks she can see him tense up at that, but it's hard to tell with him. It's not like there's a huge difference between Relaxed-Elijah and Ready-to-Pounce-Elijah.
"The werewolves attacked you," he says quietly. Then his voice turns harder as his eyes scan her for injuries and he repeats, "Are you alright?"
"So you did know?"
He hesitates for a second, then he nods, and more anger seems to evaporate at his silent confession, replaced by hurt. She honestly thought that if he was going to kill her, he would find a less barbaric way. Rebekah's part in this is more exasperating than anything, because this is the kind of behavior she's come to expect from the blonde original. But from Elijah, it's unexpectedly painful. Or painfully unexpected, she can't quite decide.
"I'm sorry, Caroline. I did try to reason with her, although maybe not as hard as I should have. I thought that she had a point. And it seems she did. Niklaus must have healed you, I don't see any injuries."
A bitter laugh escapes her at that.
"Oh he did. Only he has no idea."
"What do you mean?"
"Klaus had already left when the werewolves attacked. I still had his blood in my system from this morning, so the venom didn't have any effect. And for your information, your brother took on his wolf form and I don't know when he'll be back. The next time you plot something like that, would you mind waiting until there's at least a slight chance that he'll be here to heal me?"
There's a look of what alarmingly resembles horror on Elijah's face when he finally gets how close she came to dying today.
"I'm sorry."
She's about to snap at him, but she manages to take a deep breath and to hold her tongue. She will not let herself fall into the easiness of rage and anger. She cannot lose herself in ideas of vengeance and hatred. She's Caroline Forbes. She can find the silver lining in any situation. She will find a way to come to terms with everything she's done and everything that happened to her without taking it out on the people around her. It's not to say that Rebekah won't get an earful once she's back, but she will not let her fury be her sole focus.
"I know," she says eventually, her voice even. "Just... Elijah, if you're still set on killing me to get to Klaus, please find another way. It was a good plan. Making him face the decision of whether or not to heal me could have brought him back. But I can't go through another werewolf bite. The pain, the hallucinations... I got lucky today, but..."
