When Monday morning came I walked into her room to wake her for school but she was already sitting on the side of the bed as if she just woke up. Instead I grab her a towel from the hall linen closet and place it on the counter top in the bathroom as I say, “Get ready for school while I prepare your breakfast.”
She nods her head and heads to the dresser to grab her clothes. Even though she didn't display as much speed as she did on Saturday, she still seemed to act as if she was a normal child despite the issue with her diet. I shrugged it off as I headed down to the kitchen to wait and fix her something to eat.
When she arrives in the kitchen she looks at the bowl of oatmeal I had made as her facial expression suddenly changes. Her nose wrinkles and she gives me what I can only describe as puppy dog eyes as she asks, “Why does everything you serve me have to be so bland?”
I didn’t know what to say as I responded, “While you're at school today I’ll go to the store and see if I can't liven up your food more. In the meantime please eat.”
She sighs and lifts the spoon briefly before placing it back shaking her head.
“Would you like me to add some fruit to it?”
Again she shakes her head.
“Then what’s the problem?”
She hangs her head as she replies, “I’m not hungry.”
I take a deep breath and release it through my nose just the same as I remove the bowl from the counter and place it in the sink. I have a feeling she's not telling me the whole truth but as far as this girl went I didn’t know how much to argue with her over it. As I turn back around she asks, “Since I have a home now, does that mean I can start making friends?”
“I thought Jessica was your friend?”
“No, she’s just a girl who took pity on me. Not one I would consider a friend.”
Out of everything that I had been informed about this girl Sara, one thing was for sure her words just now where indeed my sisters. It has me curious if this girl valued her friends just as differently than anyone else as I responded, “I suppose that wouldn't hurt.”
