“This is not done yet,” someone whispered beside me and I spun around, looking for the perpetrator. No one was next to me, and I shook my head, shivering. It was the wind, I thought, rubbing my arms.

“You okay?” Calix asked, worry written all over his face. I nodded, not looking at him.

“Sleep over!” Claire yelled, smiling gleefully. Then, she ran into a wall, and we all erupted into laughter.

“I’ll get the pillows,” Mum said, leaving us with Dad trailing after her. Everyone started chatting until Chance whistled.

“Emma, we need to have a girl talk,” Chance said, shooing all of the boys out of the room. I was left with Chance, Claire, Dolly, Dan and Maya. They pushed me onto the couch. I looked between them and sighed.

“Have you done it yet?” Dolly asked, her slight southern drawling. My eyes widened and I grabbed a pillow and hit her in the head. Everyone was laughing.

“I’m still a virgin,” I seethed, pulling the pillow to my face and screaming. They all laughed at me and called the boys back down. I looked up and glared at Dolly and she blushed.

I felt the couch dip beside me and I turned to Claire who was rubbing her now red forehead. I shook my head and pulled my hair out of the ponytail, shaking it out as I looked back at Claire.

“You really need to be more careful Claire,” I said, patting her head. She groaned, and shook her head, her eyes on the floor, pouting. I stood up, making my way over to the kitchen, planning to get an ice pack, when I heard something.

“Emma.” I turned around to face Calix, a slight smile on his face yet it didn’t reach his eyes. I looked him up and down; his face was pale, and his eyes gloomy.

“Hmm?” I asked, giving him a small smile.

“I have to tell you something,” he said, taking a step towards me. I stood still, crossing my arms around my torso. Calix sighed a tired sigh and leaned against the marble counter, rubbing his eyes, his stance lazy yet calm, but distressed.

“Carmen and I aren’t together anymore; I had no idea she was going to be at the resort. And I knew that you didn’t call her today, you wouldn’t. And about Tyler, I didn’t know he was going to be their either. Plus, I haven’t even talked to either of them for months.” If he thought this was going to make everything okay, then he really must be sick, sick in the head.

“Honestly Calix, I don’t care,” I said, “you can do what you want and see who you want.” Then why is it slowly breaking my heart saying this? He just sighed and walked towards me, wrapping his arms around my waist, his head in my hair that had somehow fallen out of its ponytail.

“Comfy,” he murmured in my ear and I shiver ran down my spine, blood rushing to my cheeks. I awkwardly patted his back, a goofy grin spread across my face. Someone at the door cleared their throat and Claire and Leonard were smiling grimly at us.

“Hey guys,” I said, cracking a smile. They both nodded their heads and motioned to Calix who was hugging me, still. I shrugged, smiling. Calix pulled away, and I was cold, starting to shiver. I re-wrapped my arms around myself and made my way into the lounge room where Mum had set up all the blankets and old mattresses. I sat down on the couch where my blanket lay in a heap and wrapped it around myself.

“Can we watch Alice in Wonderland?” Claire yelled, pulling out the animated version, not waiting for our answers and put it in the VCR and pressed play. Groans emitted around the room and we all sat down, leaning back, ready to fall asleep. But no, Claire had to make us watch the whole movie, plus the one with Jonny Depp, but I didn’t mind that one.
