Chapter 7

It didn't take me long to recover from the whole ordeal. Whether that was because of the adrenaline pumping through my body, or the dark red substance that was pooled at my feet, I didn't know, but my mind was thoroughly wiped from the previous room. The lights flashed on as soon as the door closed behind me, blending back into the wall and disappearing. The room was completely white, the same as the intitatiation room. In fact it was a complete replica of it, only now there were only four walls, instead of the eight. My eyes were glued to the floor and the red, almost black, thick liquid that was pooled around me. It coated my shoes and ran down the pristine floor, leading to a corner where I saw a figure hunched over, its body heaving up and down heavily. I could hear the soft sobs leaving its mouth, filling the room. They sounded too high pitched to be a male. She was covered in red from head to toe, her hair looked to be a light colour, now stained a dark red to match the rest of her. Her arms were slim and pale in some spots, almost glowing under the bright white lights. They were wrapped around her, clutching her sides in a protective stance. Her knees were bent and she rocked back and forth on her heels almost psychotically. She was wearing a long gown-like dress that appeared to have once been white, her long hair shielded her face almost completely, adding to the fact that she was facing the wall, I couldn't see who she was.

"Miss?" My voice sounded strong, surprisingly. It travelled around the room with vibrato, there was no way she could've missed it, even whilst crying. But she didn't move, she didn't even flinch, no pauses in her rhythmic sobbing.

I made a move towards her, huddled into the far right corner of the room. My shoes made a sick squelch with every step I took. I didn't want to touch the clean parts of the floor in case I ruined it, or worse, left a print. It wasn't long before I realised where I was. This wasn't a normal situation right now. It wasn't as simple as a girl in need, these were the trials and anything could happen. I pulled my bag off my shoulder and slowly made a grab for the glass shard I had tucked away in there. I held it in my hand tightly, careful not to cut myself on the sharp edges. The girl was within breathing space now and I could see the white spots in her hair where the red hadn't touched. I didn't want to think about the overwhelming smell of iron.

I reached out to touch her, only an inch away, my fingers grazed her back when there was a loud bang behind me. I spun around, my heart banging in my chest to see the one person I never expected.

"Kal!" I said, dropping the glass out my hand and throwing myself at him. He laughed and took a step back, his arms wrapping around me instantaneously.
"May" he said softly into my hair. I squeezed him harder, trying to find some comfort from him but nothing came. Somethings wrong.

I pulled back to her a good look at his face and from what I could tell this was Kal. He was in the same clothes from before the trial, his hair still in perfect condition, gelled to perfection.

"What're you doing here?" I asked, forcing a smile. My heart was beating in my chest rapidly. I stopped my hands from shaking. Something is wrong.
He smiled once again, pushing a stray piece of hair behind my right ear. His fingers wrapping around the shell of cartilage gently. His hands were cold like ice and sent a shiver up my spine that made my brain feel fuzzy. I blinked harder than I should have a few times, trying to clear up my vision that had now gone blurry.

"I came to get you." He grabbed my hand hastily and started pulling me towards the other side of the room. I scanned the wall quickly, not seeing anything there that he could be pulling me towards. I dug the heels of my trainers into the floor, pulling him back to me. He turned his head slowly, his eyes connecting with mine and for a split second I saw something malicious in them, before they snapped back to their impassive stare.
