Mew had not been lying when he said that he was not going to be home when Gulf started working on his walls. That was okay with Gulf because it meant that he could snoop around Mew's house. The first couple of searches produced absolutely nothing. Mew might have been the most boring person alive on the surface for all that Gulf had found. But then he started noticing things that were a little off in the all-white apartment.
There was a bookshelf with one panel in the back that was not aligned with the other three panels. When Gulf tried taking a figurine (a crystal mess of an imitation of a bird, very ugly) off the shelf, it swung down, and the back of the shelf swung up. Gulf found a book and a gun.
The book had a lock on it and the gun was loaded. Gulf did not touch it too much after that, and he put things back where he found them.
Gulf found that the coffee table had a secret compartment, too. Again, there was a book with a lock on it and a loaded gun.
Gulf did not know what kind of gun it was. They had the words Desert Eagle with some numbers on the barrels, but Gulf did not know what that meant. He just knew that Mew had two guns in his house.
Besides that, the walls of Mew's apartment slowly grew with Gulf's imagination. It took him an entire week to do the living room, but when he was finished the walls were alive with fairy tale creatures. Fairies and goblins snuck around flower gardens alive with insects and small animals, unicorns hid behind trees and dragons flew among clouds. None of the creatures were apparent at first glance, a person had to look at the pictures a while to find them.
Mew was amazed when he came home late at night to find all the creatures. He would stare at the walls for hours, falling in love with the painter so fast it hurt his heart. He could not believe that anyone person could dream all of this up, much less pull it out of their bodies so well with just a simple paintbrush. He was so impressed with Gulf that he did not know how to express it, so he just avoided him. He would wait in Perth's apartment until he saw his white Jaguar pull out of the parking space downstairs, and then he would head upstairs and try to find whatever Gulf had finished that day.
All this time spent getting to know each other without ever actually seeing each other made Gulf awkward with Mew the next time a job rolled around.
Gulf sat next to Mew as he spoke Spanish with a different group of Hispanics. Gulf knew Klahan well enough at this point that he could tell the man was nervous. Gulf wanted to comfort Mew, but he did not know if Mew would be able to figure out how much he really liked him if he did that.
One of the Hispanics looked at Gulf and said something, and Mew replied quickly. They all laughed about whatever Mew said, and then they started speaking quickly and intently, Gulf obviously is forgotten.
Mew did not touch Gulf either, even when the girls came out after business had been taken care of.
These girls were much bolder than the girls at the last place they had gone to. Gulf was disappointed Perth was not there to help him keep those girls off Mew. When one of them sat in Mew's lap though, Gulf put his foot down.
He glared at the girl, who scrambled to get out of Mew's lap, and then Gulf sat down with a huff where she had been sitting. Mew's arms wrapped around Gulf instantly, and he felt Mew's lips brush lightly against his neck. "Thank you," Mew whispered into his ear, and Gulf was grateful he had worn a pair of boxer briefs to hide his instant and painful erection. He tried not to gasp loudly at Mew's action, but it was hard.
The men at the table said something, and Mew smiled when he answered them. There was more laughter, but Gulf noticed that Mew's arms stayed tight around his waist. Gulf almost fell asleep from the combination of the sounds of the ocean's tide and Mew's hand that kept stroking his hair in comforting counter rhythm. The men across from Mew signed a document that Mew had on his Tablet, and then Gulf had to get up as they all shook hands and said good-bye to each other.
