They visited with each other; his mother unable to hide the disappointment in her son's list of accomplishments until Mew started talking about Gulf's amazing talent with art. He described Gulf's art skills like he was selling a gun, going down the finer points of everything he had seen from his living room walls to the mouse painting to the seashells and the seascapes that he had seen Gulf selling on the beach.
Gulf was shocked that Mew had paid that close attention to his art, and it made him a little afraid to look at him in front of his new family because he was afraid that they would see the hero worship in Gulf's eyes as Mew's deep voice championed him.
"And what do you do?" Ann asked Mew, the interest in her eyes making Gulf want to take Mew's hand in ownership.
"I'm just a businessman," Mew smiled, leaning back as he evaded the question. "Nothing exciting like Gulf's art."
"What kind of business are you in?" Sam asked, trying to take Mew's measure as competition.
"I sell and negotiate contracts for various organizations," Mew answered just as vaguely, smiling.
Mae looked at her son, warning him with her eyes to stay quiet about what he did in front of Gulf's grandparents. He blinked at her once, slowly. They knew how to communicate with each other without words, a method of self-preservation that Mew had not forgotten over the years.
Sona looked at her little sister, surprised that she was so quiet. He had been quiet since he had married the Suppasit. She wondered what had happened between them that Mae would actually run away and marry that foreigner, leaving Thailand behind with her son. She wondered why her parents had agreed to the marriage in the first place because Mae had cried and everyone had thought that he was going to marry the Kanawut as soon as they graduated high school.
"We should go home," Sona said to Mae, "They need to do some bonding now that they're back together..."
Mew felt panicked, they were going to take Gulf away from him.
"Let Mew stay," Mr. Kanawut said firmly. "He and Gulf never liked to be separated as children, and there are some things that I would like to speak with him about."
"Fine," Mae said. "Sona and I can go back home, and the boys can sleep here or at our house, whichever they prefer. I'm sure they want to stay together, they always have before."
Mrs. Kanawut showed the ladies out, leaving Mew and Gulf alone momentarily with his grandmother and the Walias.
"So, you didn't recognize each other at first?" Ann asked Mew and Gulf.
"No, we didn't," Mew said. "Gulf's old roommate is the one who recommended him, and things were so hectic during our first couple of meetings that we didn't get a lot of time to talk," Mew gave a significant glance to Sam, but the women in the room didn't catch it. Mew was good at things like that, and it made Gulf want to giggle.
Sam more than got the message, and he smiled confidently at the older man. "That's interesting," he said. "Some might say that a more concerned employer would have taken the time to make sure that he had the history of his personal assistant before entrusting him with business secrets. Of course, that's only if you have a major company, of course."
"I'm sure most major corporations work that way," Mew said, smiling. He was a good boy and didn't mention that had Gulf not worked out as his personal assistant, he would have shot him in the head and given his body to the gangs to hide for an extra case of assault weapons. Mew thought that might make him look a little psychopathic though, and not exactly son-in-law material.
"Sam here is in a boy band," Ann said fondly. "You should be proud of your little brother, Gulf, he's incredibly famous in Thailand. He's in a group with six other boys, and they are successful."
"I learned everything from my mother," Sam said, smiling up at Ann.
"He's such a good boy," Ann said. He smiled and wrapped her arm around Sam, smiling down at him fondly.
Mew wanted to puke all over this woman. He seriously considered how quickly he was going to have to move to be able to vomit over the coffee table and onto her expensive Louboutin shoes, but he reminded himself that this was Gulf's mother and he was going to treat her with respect.
Luckily, Gulf knew his lover well enough to know it was time to go. "I'm sorry, grandmother," Gulf said, yawning a little bit. "We just got off the plane. Do you think that Mew and I could go to bed? We're really tired..."
"Of course, how rude of us not to offer. Do you need separate rooms, or is it okay if you share a room?"
"We can share," Mew said quickly before Sam could offer to share a room with his brother. "We're used to it. We had to share on some of my business trips," he told Gulf's grandmother, smiling charmingly at her.
"Such a good, smart boy," she said, reaching up to pinch his cheek.
