Maw grimaced inwardly. He had been so close! The ultimate lifeform in his grasp, only to escape. His ticket to Robotnik's favor is now gone. He couldn't stop him, he had seen the footage of what an angry Shadow was capable of. Not to mention the fear of having that energy spear at his throat. He couldn't have the research he had done so far be destroyed. He would find another way. He could go after Charles himself and find out what he had done to be able to use the Roboticizer. But no, the hedgehog was well protected by the Kingdom of Acorn. No, he'd find another way... another way...

Shadow smirked, Finally! He had figured out the computer system. The traps and badniks disabled, Shadow looked over to Rouge, she didn't look so good. Her face was pale and she had started shivering. Shadow knew that with both of those symptoms, it couldn't be good. Shadow took a knee next to her. "Rouge? C'mon, let's get out of here."

She stirred, but nothing more. Shadow's concern grew, he scooped her up. They had to leave, he could have GUN help her. But they couldn't stay here. Shadow booked it, his air shoes gliding as he made his way out. As soon as he hit sunlight, he saw a blue Hedgehog just about to race inside. Sonic whirled around and started following Shadow. "Glad to see that you're alright faker. What happened?"

"Maw used some new tech to capture me. Thanks to your distraction, Rouge was able to release me and we found some trouble on the way out. I'm taking Rouge back to GUN so they can heal her."

Sonic looked surprised, "was that somewhat of a backward way of saying, 'thanks, Sonic' for the distraction?"

"Hmph."

Sonic chuckled at the response, "Glad to see that some things never change, Shads."

As they hit GUN's base Shadow hastily explained what happened to GUN medics as they wheeled Rouge inside.

Shadow nearly jumped as he felt a hand on his shoulder.

"She'll be ok, Shads," Sonic tried to reassure.

"I'm not worried," he muttered back. Trying and failing to relax in the waiting area.

"Suuure, and I'm the queen of England."

Shadow smirked, "try to not get a big head, your majesty."

Sonic smirked. "Hey, you're learning how to quip back."

Shadow rolled his eyes, "I had a pretty good teacher-" He paused long enough to see the hedgehog smile before finishing, "Rouge."

Sonic burst out laughing, "I see she's taught you well."

Shadow chuckled back, this was..nice. It had been a long time since he had joked around like this, albeit only with Rouge and Omega. Still, it was nice.

A nurse walked in, her teal uniform distinct against the white of the walls. "Agent Shadow, Sonic?"

"Is she alright," Shadow asked, attempting to stifle the worry in his tone.

"She'll be fine," the nurse reassured. "We bandaged up the burn, and started the ring energy therapy, within a couple of days she shouldn't even have a scar. The chaos energy from the power rings should also clear up any signs of shock or trauma as well."

Shadow sighed, relieved. "Thank you,"

The nurse nodded, "One more thing, she'll need a little while before you can see her. I'll tell Dr. Marshall to send you a comn when you can visit her."

Shadow nodded. He wanted to be there for Rouge, but there wasn't much he could do right now....

Sonic's voice shook him out of his thoughts, "Well Shads, since you're on somewhat of a break right now, do you want to go meet Dad?"
