Chapter 37: "Finding a Way"

Tony's POV

Last night

I glared at the door that my parents just walked out of. They decided to go out to get groceries and pick up some pizzas for us to eat for supper, but I'm pretty sure it was just an excuse for them to avoid me.

I have been yelling at them nonstop for the last three hours. They're exhausted, I'm exhausted too quite honestly, but I've been trying so hard for them to consider letting Mandy stay.

Mandy...I should probably go check on her. I know she's upset.

Nothing I did or say helped. I even offered to move out soon, since I should be considering it anyways. I'm 24, it's time to at least consider it, and if it means the girl that I'm in love with can stay in this continent, I'm a-okay with moving out.

I slowed my step at about half way up the stairs. I do love her, and I can't believe I admitted it out loud to my parents.

I wonder if Mandy heard...

Pushing the thought out of my mind I walked up the rest of the stairs and stood at the door to Mandy's room. She was sitting on the floor with back to me. Her brown hair was in a low pony, the kind that she does when she's busy doing something and doesn't care what it looks like. Her shoulders were slumped forward, like she was defeated.

I knocked gently to let her know I was here.

"Come in" she said quietly. She definitely has been crying, and I feel awful.

"Are you okay?" I asked gently and instantly regretted it. Why would I ask? Of course she's not okay! She nodded even though her body language said otherwise. I sat down on her bed, which let out a loud squeak as weight pushed down on it.

"Can you look at me?" I asked, knowing the answer before she shook her head no. I could see her shoulders tense up, and started panicking. I don't know what to do if she cries. I know she's been crying but watching her cry is different.

"If it helps, my parents went out for a bit to pick up some groceries and some pizzas for supper. They're getting half pineapple, your favourite." I said, trying not to scrunch my nose up at the thought. How does she like that shit. She didn't say anything so I kept going.

"I honestly don't understand how your Italian and enjoy that shit. Like, you're disgracing the entire country" I joked, hoping this helped a bit.

"You can't say anything, Mr. 'I'm-So-Terrified-of-Tampons" she joked back, turning around to face me. I laughed, but my voice got caught in my throat a bit as I saw her face. Her cheeks and eyes were red and puffy. I knew my face showed concern, so I tried to say something but she beat me to it.

"It's fine. You know I'm a big cry baby anyways"

I just smiled, knowing not to prod her more. She's not okay but she doesn't want to talk about it. I get it. I sat down beside her on the floor and began helping her organize and pack up her belongings. Before we knew it, we were all done.

Maya came in shortly after, and I watched as they started talking again over the photo of us at their graduation and that hideous frog-thing Maya made Mandy. It was really nice. Even when Maya started asking about us.

After the initial embarrassment, Mandy started telling her all about the road trip, making me have to butt in to say what actually happened because clearly Mandy doesn't know how to tell an actual story.
