Leon should have sent Bella back to bed from the moment he had seen her. He had known Bella wasn't feeling well by her pale face when he caught a glimpse of her in the morning by the staircase. For the last three days she had refused to be anywhere near him. He turned to look at her. "Am I wrong? You look pale." He announced, concerned for her well being. Bella whirled around to glance at him, defiance could be seen in her eyes as she stepped closer to him.
"That shouldn't surprise you." She disclosed to him, trying to hold in her anger for the man before her.
Leon was annoyed in her lack of civility. "I want you the way you were." Bella continued to stare at him in contempt. "I will not tolerate miserable faces among my servants." He confessed, traded down the staircase approaching Bella. A spiteful grin written on his features.
Why had he let Helene disrupt them in the first place? He needed Bella's forgiveness. He wanted to continue in the conversation which would have ended when Bella went back to bed. He willed himself from walking away from Helene and Bella. Had he known what would have taken place, he would have taken Bella into his arms, moving up the steps and placing her in her room.
Three hours had passed when Corrine told him that little girl who adored Bella persisted in seeing him, he wanted to dismiss her instantly. Corrine had mentioned the one remark which was sure to get his attention. "It's about Bella." Corrine didn't want him to take it out on her. So she encouraged the red haired child. When the red haired girl told him, "My Lord, Bella is in the Village. She's very sick." Leon's first though was denial which evolved to alarm and finally grief. He had to see how sick she was for himself. The girl was brave to tell him.
He remembered how Bella appeared hours before so he knew the child spoke the truth. He summoned Florian to ask for his trusted steed at once. When the horse was in front of the castle, Leon mounted it and then Florian lifted the girl.
Before he knew it, they were in the village. He helped the girl dismount and she ran inside her home to her father. Leon strode in right after. The little girl's father couldn't believe his eyes! Leon approached the bed, bumping into the man.
Leon bent his back and incline his head to see Bella. One of his hands were placed on the pillow, the other over her folded hands. "Bella," He said in a soft voice. "Bella, can you hear me?" He requested. "It's me." He told her in the same voice. When she didn't move or try to speak, he turned to the man, his eyes conveying hate. "What have you done to her?" He demanded.
The man replied, "Nothing, my Lord." The man pointed to Bella. "We found her like that."
The child spoke as well. "I told you what happened."
Leon turned his attention back towards Bella, his gloved covered hand brushing her hair. An understanding overcame him. He removed the duvet, throwing one of her arms around the back of his neck and took her into his arms. In this modest home, she would be dead by morning. She had to be placed in a warm room in the chateau, she needed medicine.
