He missed her

He missed her. It had been five days since he last seen her. Heard her. This waiting was agonizing! Why was it so hard for her to accept him? Yes, he was horrible before. Yes, he had killed his first wife, Juliet. The circumstances to what he had done were unclear.

He knew he had done a horrible thing to Juliet. To this day, he wished he hadn't grasped her by the throat after he had learnt of Juliet's betrayal and murdered her. To this day, he couldn't forgive himself.

When Bella appeared in his life, he didn't realize he could have a second chance in happiness. It's true, his love for her had started when he made a wager with Helene to get Bella into his bed. He deceived himself long enough. His denial was he weakness. No, to put it more properly Bella was his weakness.

Leon wandered around the chateau, feeling lost and incomplete. He recalled all the memories he had with Bella. Leon observed the compass that belonged to Old Dubois. Leon couldn't stop thinking about Bella. He would love her for a lifetime if she consented to be his wife.

When Helene had delivered his letters, Leon hoped she had written him. Ripping letter after letter, he went through them. She had sent no word. Had she forsaken him? He held onto the last letter as Helene spoke. "You were hoping for word, weren't you?" She asked glancing down at him.

Leon cast the letter aside and stood up. His hands leaning against his arm chair briefly, helping him get up. "It's more than a week." He proclaimed, walking to the window.

Helene decided to give him her opinion on the subject. "If she doesn't come back," Helene began, swirling around to look at Leon. "It means she's just fine where she is."

Leon poured himself more of the medicine. He asked, "What do you know about it?" Bringing the glass up to his lips, taking a swing of the drink.

Helene stepped closer to him. "Oh, nothing." She responded. "Let's just pretend I didn't say a word."

Leon moved towards Helene. "Don't toy with me, Helene. Tell me what you know." His eyes meeting hers. Was she amused by this? "Are you sure?" She asked, her eyes not leaving his. He waited. Perhaps she could see he was not in the mood. "Well," She said. "Bella was seen at the port with her father and his master of arms." Helene clenched her eyes. When she cast her eyes away, she continued. "An attractive young man so they say." She suddenly glanced at him again. "Same age as she is."

Leon narrowed his eyes momentarily. "I see nothing strange in that."

Leon spoke the truth. For one thing her father, Old Dubois, was with them. The other aspect was he knew Bella would not have an affair. He refused to view it as strange or wrong. He understood it was her decision. Not some pretty stable boy.

Leon moved across the room. Helene whirled around, her hands clasped over her gown. "They were looking for funding to leave for the Americans."
