The doors creaked open with a mechanical hiss. The alarms rang through the glade, a sound Artemis had long gotten use to, finally quieting. The greenie weakly looked up, blinded by the bright sun. Alby and Newt looked indifferent, Artemis rubbed her forehead- she had developed a headache throughout the morning, the noisy boys only making it worse- and Gally looked at the confused boy with a smirk. Hands pulled the boy up, lifting him by his shirt and arms.

"Day one greenie, rise and shine."

The sun hadn't made it's appearance and the sky was a dark purple

The sun hadn't made it's appearance and the sky was a dark purple. The Gladers slept peacefully, only the sound light snores and distant creatures ringing through the glade.

Artemis ran her fingers through her hair. Her eyes drooped and dark circles shone under eyes, the lack of sleep affecting her. She slipped on her boots and a jacket stolen from Newt, who slept just a room away, and quietly padded down the stairs. Morning dew still shone on the ground, the first rays of sunlight reflecting peaking through the light clouds.

Artemis walked through the glade, making sure not to disturb the sleeping boys. She leaned back against the base of a tree.

Soft footsteps approached her. She glanced up and met the questioning gaze of Newt.
"I didn't mean to wake you." She whispered.
"Are you okay?" He asked sitting next. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just couldn't sleep."
He snorted softly. "Yeah, no. Your okay and Alby is a fairy princess, sure. You haven't slept well in weeks. What's wrong?" He wrapped a arm around her and she rested her head on her shoulder, tucking herself closer to him. Both their faces dusted pink, unnoticeable in the dim light.

She sighed and finally answered. "I'm fine, really don't worry. It's just, well...I don't know. I mean...nevermind. Don't worry about me, I'll be fine. How are you?" Newt rolled his eyes. "Of course I'm going to worry. Your my best friend. Just...know that you can talk to me. As for me, I'm better, thanks to you." Artemis smiled and nodded.

They at side by side, watching the sky fade from color to color, talking and laughing quietly. Finally Artemis's eyes began to droop, falling asleep. Newt smiled at his best friend. Careful not to wake her up, he picked her up, finally setting her in her bed after making his way up the stairs.

The greenie and Alby walked across the glade. The Gladers had started their jobs, their home filled with the buzz of work.
"Whatever we need, the Box provides. The rest is up to us."
"The Box?" The greenie asked.
"Yeah, Once a month they send it up with fresh supplies and a new greenie. This month that's you, Congratulations." The leader explained.
"Sent up? By who, who put us here?"
"That we don't know."
Newt limped up the pair greeting his friend.
"Hey, you alright Alby?" He smiled.
"Greenbean, meet Newt. When I'm not around, he's in charge, at least partially."
Newt shook the brunettes hand.
"Good thing your always around then."

Artemis walked up behind the blond boy and chuckled after hearing the conversation. Alby raised his eyebrow at her before turning to the newbie.

"And this is Artemis." The greenie looked confused and critical.

"Why-" He started. The girl held up her hand, cutting him off.

"If your going to ask why I'm the only girl, I'm gonna have to stop you right there greenie. I don't know."

Newt changed the subject to the previous day.

"Y'know, that was some dash you made earlier. For a second, I almost though you had the chops to become a runner. Until you faceplanted." The leaders chuckled.
"Wait, Runner?"
"Hey, do me a favor. Go find Chuck. Newt rolled his eyes and limped off to find the short boy.

"I have to go check on Ben, see ya Alby." Artemis left the boys, the greenie still confused about the girl.

@uthors note,

Hey guys! First, of all, I am so sorry for this late chapter. I'm disappointed in myself. Again, I'm sorry, the next chapter will hopefully be sooner than this one. I will edit this chapter soon, it's probably bad but I wrote it in a rush trying to get it done. The next chapter will be about the bonfire and such. I included a very cheesy scene in this chapter, I hope you like it and don't hate it. This chapter was kinda all over the place. I promise I'm not giving up or abandoning this book, I just wasn't sure what to write so it took a long time. By the way, yes , I am using center format, I write better when it's in center format for some strange reason. Do you guys want me to change it or is it ok?

Thank you to those who read this book and really hope you enjoy it. :)

Bye guys!
