Prologue - Seven Years Ago

The little boy stared out the window as he sat at the kitchen table, an empty plate sitting in front of him. The plate had once held a single slice of bread, but the boy had finished that and was now waiting for the rest of his meal.

Ten minutes had passed since he finished, and his stomach was still rumbling. He eventually decided to call for his father.

His father came in from the other room, standing in the doorway. "Yes, Varian?"

"Am I going to get more breakfast today?" Varian asked him.

His father sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "No, you're not. I'm sorry."

Varian pouted, crossing his arms. "Why not? Why does this keep happening?"

"We don't have enough funding from the kingdom to keep the farm running in these conditions," his father explained. "It's too cold outside to grow crops, and we don't have the supplies to adapt to that."

"Then why doesn't the king just give us money?" Varian asked innocently.

"That's not how it works," his father stated. "You're too young to understand."

"I'm almost eight!" Varian protested.

"Varian, we'll discuss this when you're older," his father said firmly. "I have a lot of work to do right now." And with that, he left the room.

Varian shoved his plate away and got up, going to the other side of the room, where a large painting was hanging on the wall. A painting of his family: Varian, his father, and his mother.

Varian stared up at his mother's face, at his infant self in her arms, at the strange moon-shaped pin she wore in almost every painting of her.

His mother would've told him what was going on. His mother didn't keep secrets from him like his father did.

If only she hadn't disappeared.
