I just recently learned what a vote was. A vote here on Wattpad is similar to a like on Instagram or a retweet on Twitter (I think...)
Votes help your story appear higher in rankings. For example, if your story has 100 votes and mine has 1, yours will appear higher on the list than mine.
There's nothing wrong with asking your readers to vote on your story. The ratio of reads:vote:comments is usually about 100:10:1. You will probably have more reads than you will votes. This isn't because people are evil and don't want to vote for your story. They probably just forgot.
If you feel the urge to prevent things like this, you can simply put a little authors note (or A/N) at the bottom of the chapter asking them to vote and comment.
But also? Make sure that you remember to vote on stories you like. I remember how thrilled I was when I saw my first vote for my story. It's not necessary, but it's a kind thing to do to the author.
