10:22 a.m.

With a banana in one hand and my morning coffee in the other, I sat down on the couch and turned on Splash. I’ve always loved this movie because of the fantasy element. Ever since I learned how to swim I noticed that my talent was different from others, a genuine talent. My mom has always playfully called me a mermaid. For the first eight years of my life, I believed her. Looking back on it now, I can’t imagine myself being so stupid.

11:32 a.m.

Halfway through the movie, I went upstairs and grabbed my phone. A text from Julia.

“Happy Birthday Kaela! Can’t wait to see you tonight!”

I replied, “Thanks! Yeah, see you soon!”
