Synopsis: Daiyu, a poor village girl, is summoned to the royal palace by emperor Drakon, a ruthless conquerer, to be interviewed for becoming his concubine. But when she stumbles across him he makes her his empress instead.Theme: This book didn't really leave me with a lasting impression. It had pretty generic themes like don't judge a person before you know them and family can come from anywhere. I give this book's theme three stars out of five.
Plot: The main female protagonist in the story has no major interests, aspirations, or goals outside figuring out who the male protagonist really is. As a result the book was boring in some spots particularly the ones where the love interest is at war. However the story did have some interesting kidnapping and dialogue scenes so I give it four out of five stars for plot.
Character Development: As I said before the female character has no major interests, aspirations, or goals. Her bland personality made it hard to form a connection to her or even care about how her story ended. I give this story a one out of five on character development.
Grammar: I'm not a grammar fiend. I'm sure there are some mistakes in this book that I missed but, nothing was drastic enough to pull away from the story. I give this book a five out of five on grammar.
Additional Note: This book definitely did not pass the bechdel test. The main female character was so bland that it was infuriating. Many people would use the excuse that the time period in which she was born did not allow her to aspire to be anything more. However, I find that to be an invalid excuse considering that there were other female characters in the book who were feisty and some who were warriors. In my opinion the story would have been better if it had been told from the male protagonist's point of view because his life was much more interesting than the female protagonist's.
Final verdict. This book gets 3.25 stars out of five. I would recommend it as a cute romance but nothing else because the main female character was so bland.
