Coffee with Gerard

I think for a moment. Well, he IS my favorite… “Can I, um, go with you, Gerard?” I ask a little quieter than I intended to. It comes out as a very low squeak under my breath and I curse myself for being so nervous, once again.

“What was that, sweetheart?” Frank asks, leaning in a little with his hand half-cupped around his ear.

“Oh, nothing…” I stare at the ground, feeling myself heat up a little bit.

“Frank, you’re scaring her,” Mikey teases. “Don’t worry, Vic; you don’t have to be so shy around us.” I give him a small smile. “Thanks, Mikey.”

“You’re welcome.”

Taking a deep breath, I answer Frank in a little louder tone. “Can I go with Gerard?”

“Sure!” The lead singer says happily, standing up. I follow suit. “We can just drop Frank and Bob off at the mall and leave Mikes and Ray here, if that’s okay with you.”

I laugh. “I’m sure they won’t burn the house down. Right, guys?”

“I don’t know, Vic…” says Mikey in a teasing tone. “Ray gets pretty dangerous when he’s practicing.”

“Oh, shut up. Of course we’ll keep the place tight for you.” Ray gives me a reassuring smile. “Go have fun with Gerard.”

“Wait, I can’t…” Gerard facepalms. “We don’t have a van, remember?” Everyone groans a little bit.

“Hold on!” I say. “We have an extra car in the garage. Well, it’s actually mine and it’s kind of a piece of junk. It’s a hand-me-down from my parents, but I still have my permit so I can’t go around driving.”

“Oh, that’s fine. Is it a stick? And would your parents mind?”

“They won’t, I’m pretty sure at least. And it’s automatic.”

He grins. “Great, cause I’m pretty bad at stick.”

“You can say that again,” Frank mumbles. Gerard slaps him upside the head lightly.

“Shut up, Frank. Let’s get going.” I walk over to the kitchen counter to grab my wallet, hand the car keys to Gerard, and lead them out to the garage.

Much to my embarrassment, the guys insist that I take the front seat so I give up. Gerard backs out of my driveway with no trouble. “I think I’ve got this, Vic.”

“Good, because I don’t feel like dying today.” I giggle.

We drop Frank and Bob off at the mall, which is just a tiny little place so they’ll probably want to come back soon. I give Gerard directions to to the nearest Starbucks and we arrive within a few minutes.

“This seems really fancy for such a small town,” Gerard comments as we step inside.

“Yeah, everybody in Cloverdale’s pretty proud of it.” As we wait in line, I look up at the menu and start to pull my wallet out of my back pocket.

“Oh no, don’t worry about that,” He says quickly, nudging my arm. “I’ll pay. Get anything you want, any size.” He pulls out his own wallet.

“Gerard, you don’t have to do that.” I feel embarrassed, especially since it’s been a while since I’ve had coffee and I’m kind of longing for something of the biggest size.

“Victory, look at me.” He turns to me and holds my face in his hands, looking down at me. “You don’t have to be so insecure or nervous; I’m not going to bite, okay? If you want the largest freaking size of the most freaking expensive thing on the menu, I’m going to buy it for you, because I care about you.” His hazel eyes enchant me with all the kindness inside
