And there I was, staring up with neck craned, my eyes focused and glistening in awe at the splendor of U.A.'s glassy towers.
I'm here, Dad. I finally made it. One day, I'll be sailing through the sky, just like you.
A small curve lifted itself on my lips. I wish he could be here. I wish he could see me off, watching me from outside the gates as I marched up these stone stairs. I wish he were here so I could make him proud. But they're just that--wishes. And wishes don't bring back the dead.
"MOVE IT, LOSER!"
"Wh-"
The next thing I knew, the ground came up to kick me in the knees and I found my palms colliding into the concrete. It took me only a moment to process that someone had ungraciously shoved me aside while I was lost in thought. And that, was my fault. If I was more aware, then I would have been able to swerve this bulldozing disaster and not end up on the ground like the "loser" I was.
My eyes darted upward and I lifted my chin to glare daggers at the offender. I could only see the back of his head, but boy, if I had laser eyes for a quirk, you'd best believe I'd burn this kid alive. If only looks could kill.
Not to mention, wasn't this supposed to be a hero school? This bullying crap was some middle school shit.
I could only stare at the culprit's backside as he stomped off further into school grounds. Alright, so he's blond with a gravelly-ass voice. I'll remember this.
"Are you alright?"
Huh?
I stood up, using my scraped palms to push myself up as my head turned to switch my attention to the inquiring voice. It belonged to a boy with strawberry red and cloud white hair. My eyes drifted downwards from where the colors were parted right down the middle and landed on a scar that covered a part of his face.
"Yeah, I'm fine," was all I could really say in the moment as I averted my gaze and lightly dusted myself off. "Thanks."
"I saw what happened." The boy subtly tilted his head, his eyes landing on my hands which were now back by their sides. "You're bleeding. You should go to the nurse's office."
"What, oh. This?" Lifting both palms, I now realized that, indeed, I had acquired a few flesh wounds. "It's nothing. I'll just wash it off and uh-... slap some band-aids on." I jabbed a thumb at the bag slung over my shoulder. Luckily, I had a beautiful mother who had the foresight to remind me to pack things like band-aids and tissues for such emergencies.
When I returned my gaze to his, the boy nodded his head, and we proceeded to stare at one another in dead silence. Needless to say, it was one of the most awkward moments in my life, and I didn't know if I was supposed to say something, or if he was going to say something, or what.
"..."
"..."
Did you hear that? It's the sound of me screaming for help.
"Uh-" I stiffly coughed, "I'm [Y/N] [L/N]... by the way..."
"Shoto. Shoto Todoroki."
"Cool."
"..."
"..."
"I'm gonna go." Thankfully, he was the first to finally move, even though I was technically in his way. He promptly sidestepped around me, then made his way up the stairs and towards the doors of the school's building.
"Right. Okay."
I waited a few seconds for the doors to close behind Todoroki before heading inside myself. As weird as that encounter was, I somehow came to peace with it. Usually, I was the awkward one. I have years of middle school experience to show for it, but today, I was strangely and pleasantly surprised to cross paths with someone who had social butterfingers... just like me.
Wonder what other kinds of people I'll meet here...?
If only I knew.
