I took great pride in my studies and grades, but the one subject I just could not deal with was English. Present Mic was being enthusiastic about the language to try and get us excited. Even then, I could tell that the rest of my classmates would disagree that "ENGLISH RULLLEEEESSS!!!!!!" At least some of them were smart enough to get it, like Midoriya and Yaoyorozu. But for me, English was the bane of my existence. If I went up against a villain whose quirk was just throwing English at people, I'd actually die.
Aside from that awful class, everything else was smooth sailing. I even got to meet more people in between, and match more names to faces. Hagakure, for example, was a pretty friendly person, except she didn't have a face. Well, I take that back. She probably did have a face. I just couldn't see it, but she seemed like a nice girl nonetheless.
"Hey! You're [L/N], right? I watched you during some of the tests yesterday! You have a really cool quirk."
"Huh?"
Still seated at my desk, I turned to the side and found a floating uniform with a single sleeve waving at me.
I blinked. "Oh-... uh, thanks."
I didn't know whether to feel flattered or bad. I watched people, too, but it wasn't to admire their quirks. I wanted to make sure that I didn't end up last, so I needed to know where I stood in comparison to my classmates. Yaoyurozu was perceptive enough to realize that the whole thing was just a set up by Aizawa. If I only I had caught on, too, then maybe I could've met more people instead of just seeing everyone as competition.
I paused while staring at the invisible girl before finally saying, "Your quirk's pretty neat, too."
Meeting her was a little weirder than meeting Todoroki. At least with Todoroki, both of us could stare at each other with the blankest of faces, equally confused about not knowing what to do next. With this girl, though, I couldn't even tell if she was smiling or secretly plotting my death. Her voice and body language were big signs, though, and something told me that she probably wasn't plotting to kill me. Which was a good thing.
"Yay, thanks!" It looked like she had punched an invisible hand into the air when I had complimented her. "I'm Toru Hagakure, by the way!! What's your name?"
"Uh- [Y-Y/N] [L/N]..." I stuttered. I wasn't used to this kind of upbeat energy, but... I did tell myself that I'd try to be more open to people. I did want to try and make more friends, and this was a good opportunity that had popped up.
"Nice to meetcha, [L/N]! I hope we can be friends. It's great to know another girl in the class!!"
My eyes drifted to look around the room. Her words made sense. There were other girls, too, but our numbers were fewer compared to the boys. I returned my attention and looked back at her, or rather, where I thought her head was.
"Yeah," I agreed with a small, yet warm smile. "It's nice to meet you, too."
When lunchtime rolled around, oh boy, was I pumped. I... loved food, and Lunch Rush made the. best. lunches. Sorry, Mom.
Truth be told, I would hang out all day in the cafeteria if I could. I even had a strategy all figured out in case I ever succumbed to the vice of gluttony. I'd just become strong enough to lift myself way up high in the air with my quirk, then drop my fatass on whatever unlucky villain was causing a scene. Hero Name: Cannon Ball; I Like Big Butts and You're Gonna Die.
With tray in hand, I was already nearly drooling at the delicious food while the scent of [Favorite Food] and fresh, hot rice wafted into my nostrils. Oh, and the [Favorite Side] on the side? Friggin' GLORIOUS.
I spotted Todoroki at one of the tables by himself, and decided to make a beeline there. For one, eating with him would be nice, and two, as much as I wanted to try and find Hagakure, I didn't really want to stand around like an idiot, looking for an invisible girl amongst a sea of uniforms. For all I knew, I'd just be asking for Bakugo to come bulldozing through again, and that would be a lunch knocked out of my hands and shamefully wasted.
"Todoroki, hey." I walked up to his table.
"Oh, [L/N]. Hello."
"May I sit with you?"
He nodded. "Of course."
I gave him a light smile. "Thanks."
I settled myself across from him, placing my tray down on the table, then tucking my skirt underneath my butt before taking a seat. We ate in silence for the most part, and just when I was about to speak up, I was pleasantly surprised when he spoke first.
"So, [L/N], what do you think of U.A. so far?"
"Oh-" I was caught off-guard, but this was the good kind. I was glad that he initiated this time, and it seemed like we would get to know each other a little more. "Well, it's only the second day, but..."
We shared our thoughts with one another, mainly on Aizawa and the classes we've had so far. We were both eager for the Hero Foundations course, which would be later in the afternoon, but otherwise, it was still early in the game to have any real set opinions.
There was a moment in our conversation when Todoroki's phone buzzed. He pulled it out to take one look at it and he seemed... annoyed.
"Um... everything... okay?" I asked hesitantly.
He closed his eyes for a moment as he quietly sighed, then lifted them to look back at me. "I'm sorry, [L/N]. I have some business to take care of. Please excuse me." And with that, he curtly bowed his head and removed himself from the table, taking his tray with him. He hadn't even finished his food. "I'll see you in class."
"Right. See you." I could only watch as he walked away and disappeared within the mass of students. My eyebrows arched with worry.
Huh... wonder what happened. I hope he's okay.
