I had a text from Beau when I woke up the next morning.

*I'm sorry. I had to do it. I love you, Colt. I always will. That will never change. Hug Jack for me."

What was she talking about?

"Jack!" I called from my room, scrambling out of bed, the sheets tangled around my legs. "JACK!"

He opened his bedroom door, rubbing his eyes. "What the hell is wrong with you? You're gonna wake Mama up, damn, shut up."

I held my phone out for him. "The fuck does this mean?"

He squinted for a minute before taking it from my hands. He scrolled up and down, as if looking for more messages. "That's it," I told him. "That's all she sent."

"Call her," he said.

I did. It rang. And rang. And rang.

I called again. Still no answer.

So, I called again. Still... no answer.

"Jack, what..." I asked, and he shook his head. "I don't know, brother. Get dressed, let's go to work. You can keep calling."

By the time I was ready to go at 5:30, she still hadn't answered. I had a terrible feeling that something was wrong. Even when Jack and I loaded up in our truck and left, I couldn't shake the feeling. I called three more times. Still no answer. My next move was to call Aunt Verne, but Jack was already pulling into a nearby driveway. "I'll drop you off there and call in for both of us. Say it's a family emergency."

I was out of the truck before he even stopped rolling.

Beau's Jeep wasn't in the yard. I noticed that first, and the next thing I noticed were the lights on inside so early in the morning. The screen door slammed when I ran inside and headed for the stairs, and I knew I'd have to apologize to Verne later.
