Ojombi rode with her on the trip back to the Gui city. She prompted him with questions all the way, about what games he'd played with Nomin and Jumara, what he'd learned in the days she had been away or barely conscious. She soaked up every moment of her son in her arms, and pointed out the hawks circling overhead and the rabbits fleeing their approach just to watch his eyes light and the smile steal away the sorrow and fear.
Keeping them both in the saddle was harder than it should have been. Finding ways to keep him entertained wore her out. But his presence was like seeing rays break through cloud cover on a gloomy winter day. He warmed her heart, and she smiled.
