"It means that I Triple-Dog-Dare you to climb up Mt. Ebbot yourself."

Bryan grunted as he climbed up the mountain. The dare was stupid, but it was also the painless option- at least, that's what Bryan thought when he agreed to it. Back then, climbing a mountain seemed infinitely better than getting beat up. However, the various cuts and scrapes littering his now exhausted body would beg to differ.

Any other kid might have parents who would be worried about them by now, seeing how school ended two hours ago. Unfortunately, (Or fortunately in this case) Bryan didn't have that. His parents barely knew that he existed. All they cared about were their stupid jobs. At that point, Bryan was basically just taking care of himself. So yeah, parents wouldn't be a problem. But as he climbed higher and higher, it got harder and harder to keep himself from looking down.

Bryan pushed the thought to the back of his mind. He couldn't get distracted now. If he got distracted, he might slip, and if he slipped he could fall, and if he falls he's going to d-

He pulled himself up to the nearest sturdy surface, and took a deep breath. "Calm down, Bryan. You're spiraling." He sighed and looked up. He was almost there.

Bryan pushed himself up onto the stone, only to realise that there was nothing left to climb. He had done it. He, a ten year old kid, had climbed up an entire mountain. Well, to be fair, it barely counted a mountain. Bryan was pretty sure that they just called it that to be cool.

The rational part of him urged him to go back immediately, but the child part of him wanted to explore. After all, he had come all this way, and superstition had kept him away in the past. Now, all of the old broken rocks and ruins looked so new and exciting.

However, one thing stood out among the rest. Inside a small cave, gold lettering was laid out against the walls. Bryan stepped closer.

"The Angel, The One Who Has Seen The Surface, will return. And the underground will go empty."

"What the heck does that mean? What's 'the underground?'"

Unknown to Bryan, this cave did not have a sturdy floor. In fact, there was no floor at all. The cave was a one way entrance into the mountain.

The child stepped forward, only to land on air. The cave, while small in comparison to the mountain, was rather large compared to a young boy like Bryan. Thus, he was unable to catch himself on the walls, and fell down.

Now, at this point, Bryan was sure he was about to die. There was no getting out of it. Tears started to well up in his eyes. Whether that was from fear or the fast wind blowing against him, he couldn't tell. However, at the last moment, he thought about all of the other kids.

He had to find out what happened to them. The endings of their stories were so sad. If he could just figure all of this out...

Then, suddenly, he heard an unfamiliar voice in his head. It was young but still firm, and it was clearly filled with understanding and control.

"You are filled with determination."
