Generated word of the day - Muggy

___

Taking a deep, frustrated breath, Jesse rolled over so she was lying on her back, facing the wooden ceiling of her bedroom. Her dark chestnut hair stuck to her face with sweat, the covers on her bed all tossed to one side. The alarm clock on her bedside table showed that it was just a bit before midnight, yet Jesse hadn't slept a wink that night.

The last few days had been uncomfortably hot and humid, but that day had been the worst so far. It was impossible to work on anything, or even focus on anything for that matter, the heat sapping everyone's energy. The order had spent most of the day moping about the tree house, waiting out the horrid heat wave.

Even with all the covers thrown off her bed and the window wide open, Jesse hadn't been able to find a comfortable position to sleep in. Sweat trickled across her face in the dark, her pyjamas and the sheets below her damp as a result. It felt like her skin was burning wherever it touched the bed.

Finally giving up the battle, Jesse sat upright on her bed. She reached up, wiping the sweat from her face. At least the humidity wasn't as bad as it had been earlier, considering a few hours ago it was almost completely impossible to sweat.

Slipping her legs over the side of the bed and getting to her feet, Jesse tiredly trudged out of the room. She could see a light on in the tree-house's kitchen, a sign that she wasn't the only one who couldn't sleep. Sure enough, Lukas and Olivia were both sitting at the dining table, where a small fan was positioned. Olivia had her eyes closed, chin resting in one hand while she used to the other to fan herself with. Lukas had a book in front of him, the story seeming to effectively distract him from the heat.

As Jesse approached she nearly tripped over something, only just managing to stay on her feet. Looking down, she was surprised to see it was Axel who had promptly sprawled himself out on the cool wooden floor.

"Can't sleep either, huh?" Olivia asked as Jesse slumped down in an empty chair. "It's too hot to breathe in here."

"You're telling me." Jesse mumbled, pulling a jug of icy lemonade over and pouring some into a glass. "This heatwave better break soon, or I'm going to end up drowning in my own sweat."

Olivia chuckled slightly as Jesse's words, closing her eyes and continuing to fan herself. Jesse rested her elbows on the table, letting out a slow sigh of relief as the wind from the fan blew over her sweaty form. It was silent among the group, the only sound being the gentle whirring of the fan, and occasional sound of Lukas turning a page in his book.

Jesse opened her eyes when she heard a new sound, the wooden floor creaking beneath footsteps being a sign that the heat had succeeded in costing the entire order a good night's sleep. Seconds later Petra came striding in too, her sweaty face looking like thunder.

"How does anybody live in this?" She groaned loudly, flopping down in another empty dining chair. "I feel like a melting popsicle!"

"Shh." Lukas glared over the edge of his book at the redhead for a second before focusing his attention back on the page.

"Aw man, now I want a popsicle." Axel groaned from his position on the floor.

"I'm going to freaking die." Petra groaned, leaning her forehead down on the table.

"Believe me, we all feel like that." Jesse said, pulling the jug closer again. "Lemonade?"

Petra simply grunted in response, although she didn't decline the offer, accepting the glass and thirstily drinking from it.

"I have to admit, not even reading is fun any more." Lukas said, lowering his book and using it to fan himself instead. "This is hell."

"You're telling me." Jesse mumbled, her eyes closed again. "Is a little rain so much to ask for?"
