"Are you sure that it has to be Jack?" Joelle tried to plead with her parents as they packed the last of their suitcases into the boot of their car, ready to go to the airport to start their adventures.
"Yes. It's not like you have any other friends." Phil laughed and Marie slapped his arm.
"Thanks for that one, Dad." His curly headed daughter mumbled as he reminded her of how much of a loner she might be.
"Honey, I know that he broke your heart but you're both so much older now. Maybe things will work out this time?" Marie tried to be positive as she told her daughter that Jack had to be the one to stay with her. They didn't trust anyone else to be there for their daughter. Jack had been looking after her since she was born until she turned sixteen.
When Jack Grealish broke their daughter's heart, Phil and Marie were shocked. He was the most unselfish, kindest young boy that they had ever met but the way that he had ended things with her was something they didn't think he was capable of.
"Fine. I'll put up with him for three months. Enjoy your trip." After a quick hug for each of her parents, she watched as they drove off, leaving her to look after the house.
It had been communicated to her by her parents that Jack would be arriving at two to move his stuff in but it was currently twelve and Joelle noticed that a very expensive sports car had pulled up outside her family home. The car didn't look out of place since Phil and Marie owned one of the most expensive homes in Birmingham. Joelle had grown up in luxury since her parents were both successful business owners but she was taught to be humble, independent and appreciative of what she had, whether it be the latest designer clothes or simply a roof over her head.
"Wow, this place hasn't changed one bit." Jack Grealish's strong Brummie accent broke the silence as he emerged from his sports car, taking in the mansion like house. It was exactly as he remembered it and so was the girl standing in front of him. Joelle stood on the front doorstep of the house and glared at him. She thought that he had some nerve showing up after all these years and pretending like they were still friends.
"And neither have you." Jack was breathless. Joelle's beauty was all natural and it never failed to surprise him. She had always been able to make his heart skip several beats and this time wasn't any different.
"Are you going to help me or are you going to stand and glare at me?" His voice was playful, trying to poke fun at the girl that he had once loved but it was clear to see that she was having none of it.
After six years of not making any contact, Jack Grealish was here, acting as if nothing had happened. He still had the same stupid hairstyle that Joelle used to tease him about but secretly loved. She loved when he hadn't gelled it and she got to run her fingers through his hair when his head was resting on her lap. The only difference in Jack was his new beard, he was more muscular and probably a bit taller.
Without saying a single word to the boy that Joelle once loved, she rolled her eyes at him and walked away. She walked into the house, finding that it was completely spotless so she headed straight up to her room.
Joelle's bedroom was pretty basic. She could have had her room any way that she liked when she was younger but she chose light grey walls with pale pink accents. Her guitars sat in one corner of her room, alongside her keyboard and she had various pictures hanging up in frames. It hadn't changed since she was fifteen years old. The curly haired girl couldn't bare to take down the pictures of her former best friend and now she wished that she had.
"It's exactly the same," Joelle spun round at the sound of the deeper voice and she groaned when she realised that Jack had found his way into her room.
"Wow, you still have our pictures?" The brunette boy had a faint smile on his face as he looked at the pictures of him and his former girlfriend. He had to admit, they were a really cute couple.
"Get out, Jack. You're not welcome in here anymore." Her small hands found their way to his chest and she pushed him backwards until he was out of her room.
Joelle was small, petite even. She always had been and although Jack was only slightly over average height, he had a strong build and he had always towered over his childhood best friend.
"We're not teenagers anymore, you made that very clear." Joelle begged for her voice not to crack as she remembered the day that Jack left her.
"Jojo-" He used her old nickname but stopped when he saw how hurt she was. He thought that she would be over it. Joelle was the strongest girl that he knew but it was clear to him that he had caused a lot more damage than he had anticipated.
"Sorry. I'll go and make us some lunch." He left her in her room, his head hanging down and his heart hurting as he did so.
When Jack left all those years ago, he truly believed that what he was doing was the best thing for both of them but perhaps there were better ways of doing it.
Joelle was fuming. Jack thought that things could go back to the way that they were. He hadn't contacted her in over six years. She doubted that she had even crossed his mind and she thought that might hurt more.
Whilst Jack prepared them both some lunch that he probably wasn't going to get to eat with her, Joelle pulled out her songwriting notebook and a pen and started to scribble down how she felt.
a/n: our first proper chapter with both jack and joelle! obviously joelle was left very hurt when jack left and obviously jack didn't realise how much damage he had actually caused :(
