A few days after Jack had thrown his party in the Jarrett household, Joelle had pretty much forgotten about it. She was still giving the Brummie boy the silent treatment, not being ready to talk to him yet. She knew that she would have to at some point. There was no way that she could avoid talking to him for three months, it was impossible but the longer that she could keep up the act, the better.
After returning from a gruelling hike with her dog, Kevin, Joelle headed to her room to grab her songbook. It was a very well-loved notebook with coffee stains on most of the pages and much of the front cover missing but it contained all of her feelings. It was her safe haven.
Once the brunette found the book, she removed her guitar from its stand and made her way outside and into the treehouse that her dad had built her and Jack when they were five and six.
The pair shared many memories in the treehouse. It was where they shared their deepest secrets with each other, where Jack had kissed his best friend for the first time and where he had told her that he loved her. Joelle couldn't help but feel ashamed of how naive she was when she was sixteen. How could she have believed that Jack really loved her? But then again, she had no reason to doubt him. that boy had never told her a lie in his life.
Sitting herself on the pile of cushions that were probably older than the girl, Joelle positioned her guitar in her arms and strummed the chords of a song that she had recently written. She hummed softly to herself, letting her fingers move freely across the strings.
Nobody really knew where Joelle got her passion for music from. Neither one of her parents were musically gifted and her grandparents liked to have a dance to the radio from time to time but they were in no way talented. From a very young age, Joelle had been pulled towards music. She was always dancing, singing and she was gifted her first ever guitar when she was six years old. She couldn't do much with it at first but her parents paid for her lessons.
Jack remembered when they met up in the tree house when Joelle was eight and he was nine. She had just learnt the song that she had spent months trying to perfect and when the curly haired girl showed him, he knew that she was going to be a star one day. His favourite thing in the entire world, aside from football, was seeing and hearing joelle perform. He watched her play the lead of Gabriella in their school's production of high school musical and he had never felt prouder.
The Brummie boy heard the soft voice of Joelle float in through the open windows, bringing a small smile to his face. He had missed hearing her voice. It was special and unique. He had never heard a voice like hers.
Jack found himself wandering outside and into the fresh air so that he could hear her voice a little more clearly. Her voice was angelic and Jack could sit and listen to it all day.
When he was younger, he would beg for joelle to sing to him. It didn't matter the occasion but he was most convincing when he had had a bad day at school or training.
The Brummie boy made the brave decision to climb up the tree house and peek his head in, watching as Joelle finished strumming her guitar.
"You've still got it." He offered her a sweet smile and he was relieved when she returned the gesture.
"And you still don't know how to not be creepy." She giggled, the sound making Jack's heart flutter a little. She was referring to when Jack used to do the same thing when Joelle was having a jam session all those years ago.
"When's your next gig?" He was curious and desperate to see her perform. He hadn't watched her in so long and Jack would love nothing more than seeing her do what she loves once again.
"Tonight. It's written on the calendar." The curly haired girl informed him as she finished scribbling in her notebook. Many would call the girl 'old fashioned' for actually using a calendar and not having one purely to drool over attractive men but it helped her to keep track of what was going on in her life. Not that she had much to keep track of but that was besides the point. She felt much more organised when she used the calendar for it's real purpose.
"Cool, I'll be there." Jack gave her a quick wink before leaving the tree house, afraid that Joelle would have hit him over the head for his flirty behaviour. Instead, she sat there in shock that she had managed a full conversation with him and enjoyed it.
Perhaps Jack had changed from the stupid seventeen year old boy that he once was and perhaps things could go back to the way that they were six years ago.
