Chapter Twenty Two: On Death's Wings

You wake up with a small moan, feeling more refreshed than ever before. Your face is warmed by the heat of the rising sun outside the window. But that doesn't compare to what warms your chest.

You look at Mina's sleeping form, the quilt falling around the subtle curves of her naked body like a veil.

You gently swing your one arm over her and press your face into her hair. You kiss her lightly on the forehead, and with one long inhaling of breath, her scent fills your nostrils. You wish you could stay like this forever. But you have things to do, unfortunately.

With great reluctance, you untangle your bodies and throw off the covers. It's surprisingly hard to find every item of clothing, as most of it is strewn, not only across the floor, but a few shelves too. You look back at Mina and a rush of excitement dances across your skin, the sensation of her touch still fresh in your memory. You even feel a hint of regret when you smother the warm feeling with the cold embrace of your uniform.

You sit on the edge of the bed and finish slipping your mother's pendant around your neck, when you hear a light groan behind you. You forget to tuck it into your uniform, when you feel a thin pair of arms wrap around your body, and a head rest against your shoulder.
"Morning..." Mina says groggily as she tightens her grip on you.
"Hey..." You turn your head and give her a quick kiss, before nestling your head against hers.
"You sleep ok?" Mina groans happily at your question, running her hands over your chest as she does.
"Yeah...You?"

"Better than ever." You say, staying in Mina's arms for a few more seconds before standing, much to her disapproval.
"Do you have to go?" You raise an incredulous eyebrow and you can't decide whether she forgot she's joining you in the meeting today, or whether she'd just rather stay in bed...Not that you blame her.

"Come on. You need to get ready too..." You begin to scoop her clothes off of the ground and pass them to her.
"Or do you want me to leave you here?" She puffs out her cheeks in a mock pout and starts to get changed.
"I'll be waiting outside when you're ready." You head for the door, cracking it just a little to check no one is walking through the hall before you decide to open it. Satisfied that Mina won't become the talk of the base, for all the wrong reasons, you sneak out the door and press your back against it, just to be safe.

As you wait, you start to hear a happy tune being whistled down the hallway and getting closer. In a few seconds, Hanji passes you, but stops when she sees you.
"Good morning, (Y/fn). You look well rested." She says, a knowing smirk dancing across her lips. You give a non committal nod in reply, attempting to hide the small blush that threatens to overwhelm you.

She begins to rock back and forth on her feet as she continues to whistle her song.
"Are you excited to meet your new teammates today?"

"As long as they listen and get the job done...I don't care if we get along or not." Hanji lets out a throaty chortle.
"Yeah. I've kind of figured out that friendships don't really mean that much to you. But in all seriousness, (Y/fn). It probably isn't such a bad idea to consider expanding your circle." Hanji places a tender hand on your shoulder and smiles at you kindly.

But the moment is destroyed when you feel the door behind you open, nearly pushing you and Hanji to the floor. Mina steps out of the room, seemingly unaware of her hand in nearly introducing the cold floor to your face, and smiles at you both.

Hanji straightens her uniform before smiling back.
"Good morning, Mina. I heard you're going to be joining (Y/fn) on their squad. Am I right?" Mina's smile grows larger.
"Yes, that's right." Hanji nods her head in understanding.
"It's always good to try and get closer to your teammates, right?" Hanji wriggles her eyebrows mischiveously, whilst Mina's shoot up so far you're worried they're going to dissapear into her hairline.
