"Remember, Sanemi, in our next life, I'll..."

Sanemi's eyes shot wide open. His pillow was wet with tears and sweat. His limbs lay sprawled on the messy bedsheets. The sound of his loud breathing echoed in his head.

Spring 20XX
5.00 a.m.

There it was again, the dream that he had on every day of spring for years. No matter how different the start was, it always ended in the same scene of vermillion.

Under the vast cloudless blue sky, he stood under a red-filled tree among a meadow. His hand was on the hilt of his sword while the other rested on the side. His clothes were a blur of black and white.

In the billowing wind, a woman in a pink kimono stood beside him, caressing the red petals on an outstretched branch. She would pick every flower except the red ones on the tree. Her face was a smudged painting, a blurred part of the dream he couldn't see if he tried. Every time he tried to talk to her, his lips wouldn't move. He just watched her mournfully.

She turned to look at him. Though he always knew her next move, her electric eyes always caught him off-guard. His heart would skip a beat while his grip on his sword tightened.

Her voice flowed like a calm river. Something about water had always irked him, but when it came to that woman, it hit differently. "Sanemi, do you know what these flowers mean?"

She looked at him with a smile. A few seconds later, she laughed, "Thought so."

"Sanemi, never pluck these flowers, or else you'll separate the lovers and it'll rain." She rubbed a petal between her fingers and her eyes glittered with kindness. He saw himself move a little, then the woman gasped in offence. "But it's true! It's not just a legend."

Her anger simmered down quickly with a soft huff. Her face turned red as she hid her face behind the branch. "I-I mean I wouldn't want to be separated from you... you know what? Forget I said anything!"

He moved silently and careened towards the woman. She blushed as his hand slid her hair off her cheek. Running a thumb across her cheekbone, she listened intently to his words. It was a bunch of muffled mumbles but she heard it as clear as day.

The woman beamed, held his hand and pressed it against her cheek. She let out a hollow wistful laugh and gave a crumpled copy of a smile. It was like she was leaving him for a far-away place.

"I don't have much time left," she muttered into his hand. "Remember, Sanemi, in our next life, I'll..."

Sanemi closed his eyes, though he tried his best to open them. Just to lengthen the time they had together, even for a little while, to know who she was.
