I turned the Mockingjay pin in my hand as I waited for the flying bus to pick me up to go to the schoolhouse. How I had gotten the pin I know, but I don’t know how my mother got it. You see, she gave it to me. I had heard of it before I got it and it amazed me with its delicate history. There was a book, written by a woman. It was about 90 years ago. She was the daughter of the owner of the pin. She told its story, and her mother’s story. How back then, 125 years ago, the government would have children fight for the death in order to gain the public’s attention. They were to tell, and show that they shall never rebel again. My neighbor, Josh, came out of his house and I quickly tucked the pin away, deep into my pocket so only I could touch it.
“What did you just put in your pocket?” He asked with wonder.
“Oh, it’s nothing.” I replied simply.
“I know your hiding something. Come here. Show me what you’re hiding. I want to see.” I didn’t understand why he wanted to look at my secret so much.
“No, OK. Just leave it be.” He hushed up until the bus came. When the bus did come, he rushed ahead to get on first. I had no complaint. Once I got on, I spotted an empty seat in the back of the bus. As I sat down, the bus zoomed away from my house, onto the next stop. I started to pull out my book, which was the book that I spoke of earlier. I was close to finishing it. At that point, she was talking about the end of the Great War here in Panem. Her mother, and a few others, including the author’s father, was leading a big crowd of anger. Then, suddenly, I felt a light tap on my shoulder.
It was Josh. “Now will you tell me what you hid away?” Wow. If I didn’t show him alone, does he really think I’ll show him in public?
“No Josh.” Then his friends started to come close. It was a jumble of questions coming right at me. I could hardly hear one person at a time.
“Tell us! Please? Please?”
“Come on! We won’t tell a soul! Cross our hearts hope to die!”
“It’ll be over in a minute if you just tell us.”
“We would keep it amongst ourselves!” That was Josh.
They started to guess. This was getting pathetic.
“I wonder if it’s a boy’s cellular number!”
“Maybe it’s about the latest gossip!” That one actually made me laugh. My cold, cherry red cheeks stayed red from laughter. Then I stopped. Someone in the crowd shouted the correct answer.
“What if she has the Mockingjay Pin?!” Everyone laughed. I stood still as a rock.
