The rest of the term was just the same as the first few weeks. My mother would send letters expressing her disappointment in me. Great parenting, am I right?
Remus and I both became much closer, despite the fact that our time together was limited quite often. I noticed he was often disappearing once a month or so. I didn't think much of it the first time, but it kept happening. I would ask him what was going on, but he would just stutter and say his mum fell ill and he had to go visit her.
Sirius, despite being only twelve, was constantly flirting with girls in 3rd year. I found it revolting that he was flirting at such a young age. It may have been because he was a bad flirt, or just because he was my brother. Anyway, Sirius was just gross in general.
James was constantly talking about Quidditch, something I learned we had a shared interest for. But he didn't know when to admit he was wrong! Blabbing on about how the Falmouth Falcons were better than the Chudley Cannons. Absolute rubbish!
Peter seemed scared of me sometimes. Maybe because I hexed him after he tried to steal a box of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans from my stash of candy in the common room. It was only in the common room to keep it away from my roommates. I found out later that Peter had only been trying to steal it because James told him to. Then James apparently spent his afternoon hiding from me.
I learned lots of things about those four boys. The first being that James and Sirius were equals when it came to idiocy. Remus was definitely hiding something, and Peter didn't like me much. Oh, and all of them loved to prank people for their own sick pleasure.
I learned that the hard way. Being the punch line of the joke more often than not, was absolutely one of the most exhausting things ever. Sometimes it got a bit much, but the four boys quickly turned their attention to Severus Snape when they realized they ran out of pranks to pull on me. This happened all in a matter of months.
I hated to think of how Snape felt with their constant teasing and rude remarks, no matter how much I despised him myself. Snape wasn't just the victim all the time. He had his fair share of things to say to get to the boys. It was a mutual feud the five of them sported.
However much time I spent with the boys, my life did not revolve around them. I had friends of my own, and I didn't need Sirius, or my family name to help me make them. I had several friends in my year, as well as some other friends I had managed to make outside of class.
It was nice knowing I had done something for myself. Everyone else in my family seemed to like using the Black family name to get what they wanted. Except Sirius. He had always liked doing things for himself, and our parents had been trying to plan arranged marriages for him since he was born. It seemed to be his escape. Chasing after girls, even at the age of twelve.
I was tempted to ask my mother if I could stay at Hogwarts for the break, but of course as soon as I could build up the courage to send a letter, she beat me to it. The letter arrived in the beak of my mother's black owl.
Dearest Daughter,
You and Sirius will both be joining your father and I home for Christmas break. We will discuss your sorting at home. Your punishment will be decided after your arrival. If you fail to obey and return, you will face consequences. You will come home for break, and your insubordination might be overlooked.
Best regards,
W.B.I don't know why she stressed the fact that I was required to go home for the break, but it was clear she was still very angry with what happened at the beginning of term. I also had never seen my mother sign a letter with her initials. Maybe I had just never made her angry enough.
'Your punishment will be decided after your arrival.' I wonder what exactly that meant. I had never really done anything to extravagant to rebel against them, but I don't think it would be too bad. After all, it wasn't my fault I was sorted into Gryffindor. Right?
I wrote that in about half an hour. Sorry if it sucked, but apparently y'all are getting a punishment. Maybe it'll be awful, or maybe it'll be pretty chill. Who knows???? Anyway, thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoyed this chapter. xx
All my love,
L
