CHAPTER 3
Daniel got home early that day. After racing out of that meeting, and all that destruction that creature had caused, he forgot all about his briefcase and the papers on his desk.
Daniel went back to find that building spic and span. Like the beast hadn’t even appeared and the building never shook like there had been an earthquake. He had asked Claire about it all. “Mr. Moore, I have no idea what you are talking about. Are you sure you’re okay?” was all she answered. Daniel nodded and gathered his things before leaving.
After he left the building in alarming confusion, he decided to take a walk the streets to think about the day. He grabbed a newspaper from the closest newspaper stand and covered his head. It was still raining. Luckily, he had had an extra coat hanging in his office. He dodged the afternoon rush of people who didn’t care who they were running into.
Daniel was about to run head first into 5 men carrying a large box when someone, or something, knocked him out of the way. Daniel shook his head, the rain dripping down his face. No one was laying near him; there was a thing laying there though. A creature, the size of a dog, was laying on its side not but a foot away from Daniel’s briefcase.
The creature had jet black fur, close shaved, and a curly tail. Anybody would have mistaken this creature for any dog. Until it opened its eyes which were blood red. Daniel jumped up in alarm. The creature got up onto its hindquarters and growled at Daniel. Daniel, not knowing what to do, but his instinct made him kick the creature back. It squealed in pain before running away into the dank alley. All that football training sure did come in handy.
When he turned to get his briefcase, a few papers were lain on the puddled sidewalk but his briefcase was nowhere to be seen. Daniel picked the papers up and looked around frantically for his briefcase. He didn’t see it anywhere. He flipped through the soggy papers; all of the important ones were there, even Belle’s sketch. Damn, I forgot to give it back to her. Daniel shoved the papers into his coat pocket, hailed a cab and went home.
------
After having coffee with Daniel, Belle had rushed home as soon as she could hail a cab. While riding home, Belle studied Daniel’s card. Daniel Moore. His name sounded like honey, smooth and sweet to the tongue. Through his charming, and sexy shell, she could tell all of what he said about his childhood had been real. He showed deep scars from the heartbreak of that one girl. Poor Daniel, one girl had thrown his whole world out of orbit. He had healed those scars but clearly talking about her had made them bleed again. Just thinking about Daniel suffering made tears glint in her eyes.
Once inside her small apartment, Belle was greeted by her Siamese-Persian kitten, Murphy. He launched himself from the little table near the door, onto her shoulder, latching his tiny but sharp claws into Belle’s coat. “How’s my little man been today?” Belle cooed as she pet his soft, furry head. Murphy purred and rubbed his head against Belle’s jaw. Belle set Murphy down on the hardwood floor and slipped her jacket off and hung it on the coat rack. Glancing at the clock on the wall, it was only 5 o’clock.
She went to the kitchen to get a cup of tea and to start making dinner and give Murphy some warm milk. The minute she stepped into the kitchen, Belle screamed. Bloody footprints covered the white, tiled floor. A pool of blood lay in the middle of the small dining table. Belle ran to her phone in her bedroom. Sitting on the bed, she dialed a number.
“This is Daniel. Whom am I speaking to?” “Daniel, its Belle. I need you to come over. Right now” Belle whispered.
------
Belle only had to give Daniel her address, and he was there in a matter of 15 minutes. Belle answered the door in tears. “Belle, what’s wrong?” Daniel asked in a soothing voice, placing his hands on her shoulders. Belle only pointed towards her kitchen. Daniel walked over to the entrance, tense with adrenaline.
Running his eyes around the kitchen, his facial expression turned to horror. There was blood everywhere. Murphy was sitting in the entrance hissing and mewing pitifully. Daniel gently picked him up and moved him to the couch before walking into the kitchen. “Belle, I’ll need a mop, a rag, water, and some bleach.”
Nice cliffhanger right? I want to know who's blood that is though. I'm surprised Murphy didn't give Belle a heads up though! I mean a "hey, there's blood all over the kitchen" would be nice if I walked into my house one afternoon with no one home all day except my cat.
