HER BREATHING PICKED UP AS THE TUBE closed from around her, incasing her inside. tilan nodded at her, almost telling her through his eyes.
i know you artemis, i know you can do this.
artemis felt a tug looking at him, she might never see him again. no, she couldn't think that way. she will see him again.
she started rising and turned around as her chest heaved up and down, up and down. the sun burned into her eyes before she could get a glimpse of the arena, and she wished she never got a glimpse of it.
it was a whole plain. completely flat land for miles around, so everyone could see every movement. until at the cornucopia, an unusually wide tree rose at least hundreds of feet in the air, covered by branches upon branches.
ten,
artemis looked around, steel was no where in sight. the sun blocking her vision of half the tributes in their prepared positions.
nine, eight,
she brushed a stray hair behind her ear, the rest of her long hair pulled back into a low pony.
seven, six, five,
artemis glanced to the left, of course she was next to catherine hadley who was already looking at her intently. artemis broke contact and glanced at her left, a little girl from five.
four, three, two,
she got in stance position, ready to run toward the cornucopia. you can do this.
one.
a long siren echoed throughout the arena signaling her to take off and sprint as quick as she could. she pumped her thin legs as hard as she could until she reached the cornucopia. she wasn't the first one when she did, mackerick was grabbing a sword. his dark brown eyes glanced up at her and he pursed.
"look out, seven." artemis' heart stopped as she ducked seeing the dagger maverick threw right past her head, she turned quickly to see a random male, eight she believes, dead. the girl looked back at the male and gulped, semi scared for her life. maverick didn't pay her any attention though, and ran off the opposite direction far away from the cornucopia.
artemis took that as her signal to grab a bow and a few daggers, there was a small pull-string backpack in the corner that she grabbed and put on her back before pulling herself up the tree quickly. the careers didn't even bother coming to the cornucopia, artemis noted as she kept pulling herself up the tree. she watched them killing people with their bare hands below. it made her sick.
artemis kept going up the tree as quick as she could, she was high enough that she was concealed by branches and bushy artificial leaves. yet she could still see out, she wondered if this was the gamemakers doing. if this was the only safe part of the arena, since there had to be one.
